Sally Steadwell Obituary

Sally F. Steadwell, 94, of Hamden, Connecticut, peacefully passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 1, 1931, in New Haven, she was the cherished daughter of the late Walter and Ann Hughes Freeman. Sally was educated in the New Haven Public Schools and graduated from James Hillhouse High School. For many years, she dedicated her career to Southern Connecticut State University, serving as a valued member of the Connecticut Hall on-campus commissary staff. Known for her kindness, wisdom, and warm presence, Sally was fondly remembered by colleagues and students alike. Beyond her professional life, she was a faithful and devoted member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, serving as the church administrative treasury staff for many years. Sally lived a life of service, love, and creativity. She delighted in hosting gatherings that brought friends and family together. A gifted seamstress, she sewed with precision and passion, creating pieces that reflected her artistry. With an unmatched competitive spirit, she was known for her love of card games, which she rarely lost. In her younger years, Sally competed in local pageants and became a well-regarded model, admired for both her external beauty and inner grace. She also enjoyed painting and drawing, found joy on the tennis court, and nourished her spirit with the timeless sounds of jazz. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Cheryl Lyn (Michael) Frisby; beloved niece, Toni (David, predeceased) Phillips; four grandchildren, Dominique Dancy, Danielle Dancy, Marlon Frisby, Remi Frisby; and great-granddaughter, Zoë Harry. She is also remembered with love by a host of extended relatives and dear friends. Sally is predeceased by her parents; husband, Howard Steadwell; beloved and devoted daughter, Robin Ann (Albert Ray, surviving) Dancy; brother, William Freeman; and former husband, William Saunders. Sally's life was a testament to love, faith, and resilience. Her legacy of grace and strength will be carried forward by all who knew and loved her.

Cousin Sally was the sweetest person.
She was my grandmother, Mary´s, first cousin and I remember always loving to be in her presence.
She was my grandmother´s first cousin and my grandmother absolutely adored her cousin.
She really will be missed.

We met at the Stetson Library Book Club. My memory of her is how she managed to give everyone grace. No matter the situation. It could have been the evil character in our book, or one of us when our conversations turned to gossip. She was so generous with her kindness. We all missed her contribution to our group when she no longer came to our gatherings. So from all of us from the former club we say, till we meet again.
