Troy Johnson Obituary
Troy Douglas Johnson, 62, beloved life partner of Chara Gill, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on October 3, 2025. Troy was born on May 9, 1963, to Jacquelyn Barrows and the late Riley D. Johnson, Jr., stepson to Anthony Barrows and Cerise Johnson.
Troy is a native of Hartford, CT. and has resided in Glastonbury, CT for the last 32 years. He was a graduate of Weaver High School and spent his professional career in the hospitality industry.
One of the special qualities Troy was known for was being a great storyteller, impersonations were included for a bit of special effects. Troy grew up in Bowles Park; it was a legacy he wore like a badge of honor. Bowles Park 4 life! That's where he made many lifelong friends and relationships. He often reminisced about time spent at the Boys & Girls club, running around the neighborhood with his friends, and attending Bowles Park Day.
Other stories Troy had on a regular rotation were fond memories of meeting the Whispers when working at Wing It (they fell in love with Troy instantly) and getting invited to their concert the next night and bringing his son, Little Troy, along for the experience. He loved spending time with his dad, his hero, with whom he spent countless hours perfecting the art of barbeque ribs in the back of the Carpe Diem. Troy loved his mother, Jackie, to the moon and back. He enjoyed introducing her to his friends and hearing them comment on how beautiful she is. And he always had a twinkle in his eyes when he spoke about how he courted the love of his life, Chara.
Troy loved working as a chef. It was the perfect pairing of the two things he loved doing, cooking and interacting with customers. While working at Bertucci's, Pratt & Whitney and Max Amore, his mastery of the grill made him a customer favorite, so much so, they often asked for him by name.
Troy made friends everywhere he went. There wasn't a conversion he'd shy away from. Should the topic be about his favorite sports teams, he was ready. Lakers, Cowboys and the Yankees, bring it on.
Two proudest moments of Troy's life were the day Little Troy was born, and the day Little Troy donated a kidney to him on October 1, 2012.
Troy spoke his mind, had an unforgettable smile, the funniest personality and the biggest heart. He was loved by everyone. What we love about Troy is that he lived out loud.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the Hartford Hospital's Kidney Transplant team, particularly Dr. Ann Lally and Dr. Faiqa Chema, the staff of Bliss 9 ICU and Step-Down units, the dedicated members of Hartford Health Care at Home and Hospice team.
In addition to his grandparents, and father Riley D. Johnson, Jr., Troy was predeceased by his stepfather Anthony Barrows, mother in law; Millicent Gill, aunt; Jill Carson, and nephew; Andre James.
Troy leaves to cherish his memory Chara Gill, his soul mate of 34 years, mother; Jacquelyn Barrows, son; Troy Johnson (Sonsharay), stepdaughters; JaNique Gill and Kiara Gill, grandsons; Troy (TJ) Johnson and Camiren Gill, granddaughters; Milan Johnson and Cali Johnson, sisters; Robin Porter, Tracey Stanley (Ulysses), and Tesha Black, brother; Riley Johnson, III (Tyanna), nephew; Trey James (Cindy), niece; Reba Stanley (Kamren), uncle; Howard Johnson, aunts; Barbara Ragland and Elnora Cook, stepmother; Cerise Johnson. A host of other relatives and friends will miss Troy including special friends Melvin Speight, Kenneth (Kee Kee) Crews and Michael Dobson.
