William Rowen Obituary
William Paul "Bill" Rowen, age 87, of Durham, formerly of New York City and Egremont, MA, passed away on September 4, 2025. He was born on August 14, 1938, in Pittsfield, MA, the son of the late William Michael and Mable Mackie Rowen.
Bill lived a life marked by creativity, and unwavering dedication to both the arts and social justice. His early years were shaped by a deep love of music and learning. Bill attended Deerfield Academy in Georgia before continuing his education at Shorter College. His passion for music led him to the Yale School of Music in New Haven, CT, where he honed his craft and laid the foundation for a rewarding career. In the vibrant musical landscape of New York during the 1960s and 70s, Bill made his mark as a talented copyist for Mitch Miller during the height of the pop music boom. His meticulous work supported some of the era's most memorable productions. Beyond pop music, Bill contributed to jazz recordings, commercial jingles, and Broadway musicals-his skill and dedication resonating through every note he helped bring to life.
In the 1980s, Bill embarked on a new chapter that reflected his deep sense of social justice. Transitioning from music to advocacy, he devoted himself to the tenant movement in New York City. With tireless energy and commitment, he worked to stabilize rents, correct landlord abuses, helping residents remain in their homes. His efforts left a lasting impact on countless lives and communities. Bill was also a man of rich personal passions. He found joy in collecting books, exploring new places through travel, savoring good food, and immersing himself in music throughout his life.
Bill cherished time spent with his many grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy. He spent his retirement traveling and sharing life with his loving partner of many years, Liz MacKenzie. Together, they built a life filled with music, books, travel, and friendship, spending their time at their homes on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and in Egremont, MA. Liz predeceased him in 2022.
Bill is survived by his twin brother, Bob (Martha) Rowen of Brooklyn, NY, with whom he shared an extraordinary bond. He also leaves behind his children - Paul (Sherry) Rowen of Plant City, FL Michael Rowen of Clinton, CT Bill (Jessica) Rowen of Guilford, CT Celia Rowen of New York, NY Colin (Kristen) Rowen of Wycoff, NJ and Brian (Lydia) Rowen of Manchester, CT.
In addition to his parents and his companion, he was predeceased his sisters, Judy and Clarrisa.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service on October 7, 2025, at 11am at In Memoriam Cemetery, 18 Maplewood Ave., Wallingford, CT. There will be no hours for visitation. Wallingford Funeral Home 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, CT, has been entrusted with arrangements.
