Bernard Ross McCance, 87, of Smithfield, Illinois, passed away at 6:23 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, with family by his side. He was born on June 30, 1938, in Canton, Illinois, to Ross and Grace (Burrows) McCance. Bernard married Judith "Kay" Donaldson on July 5, 1964, in Bloomington, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2025. Surviving are two daughters, Karen McCance of Good Hope, Illinois, and Stacey (Monte) Creger of Dunlap, Illinois; five grandchildren, Ben and Alexis McCance, Makayla, Tyler, and Alexis Mathewson; and one great-granddaughter, Amelia Mathewson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Cynthia McCance, and his brother Gerald McCance. Bernard graduated from Bushnell-Prairie City High School in 1956 and later attended Bradley University before accepting an apprenticeship with Caterpillar, Inc. He dedicated more than 44 years to Caterpillar, retiring as a skilled pattern designer. Alongside his career, Bernard farmed the family farm throughout his life. Though it was challenging to balance two jobs and family responsibilities, his heart always remained on the farm. He was a man deeply rooted in faith and devoted to his family. He possessed a beautiful tenor voice and found joy in sharing it, singing at church, weddings, and funerals. In their retirement years, Bernard and Kay enjoyed traveling together, cherishing each new experience side by side. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the Checkrow Community Church with Pastor Brett Fisher officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the church. Interment will follow in Bushnell Township Cemetery.
