Clara "Laverne" Barker, 88, of La Belle, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2025, at LaBelle Manor Care Center in LaBelle, MO.
Laverne was born April 15, 1937, in Taylor, MO to Anton and Clara (Goehl) Bergman. She was married to Darrell "Red" L. Barker on October 2, 1976, in Quincy, IL. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2025.
Survivors include her six children, Tonna Moushey (Bob Venker), Danny Alderton (Cindy), Randy Alderton (Lynn), Linda Edwards (Tom), Tina Ballinger, and Linette Richards (Jerry); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Laverne was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Viola Winner; three grandchildren, Daniel Alderton, Aaron Moushey, and Airy Hoffman; one Son in-law, Steve Ballinger; and one nephew, Roy Tate.
In her early years, Laverne contributed her talents to Quincy Paper Box before embarking on a heartfelt journey as the owner of Laverne's Daycare. Her home was a haven of nurturing and learning for countless children, and she poured her heart into every moment spent with them.
Laverne's passion for painting was evident in the beautiful works she created, many of which adorn the homes of friends and family. Inspired by Bob Ross, she would often be found with a brush in hand, bringing serene landscapes and vibrant scenes to life. Her artistic flair didn't stop there; she was also skilled in sewing and crocheting, crafting blankets and mending garments with love and care.
An outdoor enthusiast, Laverne relished the time spent fishing on Goose Lake and camping at Mark Twain Lake. Mushroom hunting was a favored pastime, bringing her closer to nature's simple pleasures. She also enjoyed the thrill of playing slots at the Mark Twain casino with her friend Darlene.
Laverne's love for the Golden Girls, the music of Elvis, and old country tunes provided a soundtrack to many cherished family moments. Her greatest joy, however, was in gathering her family, especially during the holidays. She was the heart of every celebration, ensuring that each gathering was filled with laughter, homemade meals, and her legendary egg rolls.
Laverne's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, creativity, and the bonds of family. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends.
