Edward Obrock Obituary

Dr. Edward Henry Obrock, 95, of Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee, formerly of Quincy, a well-known and respected Quincy general dentist died July 28, 2025 in Gallatin. Born Dec. 26, 1929, in Quincy, Dr. Obrock was a son of Clarence C. and Minnie A. Wortman Obrock. He married Leola "Lee" G. Schmidt in Hope Epiphany Lutheran Church in Chicago on August 28, 1954. They were married for 64 years, until Lee's death on September 28, 2018. Dr. Obrock was a graduate of Quincy High School, Gem City Business College, Quincy College, and the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center, College of Dentistry. He received his professional degree in 1955 and entered the U.S. Air Force, completing basic training at Maxwell-Gunter AFB in Montgomery, Alabama. Captain Obrock was stationed at the 4161st USAF Hospital, Strategic Air Command at the Davis-Monthan U.S. Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Following military service, he began civilian practice in Quincy, purchasing the practice of Dr. Warren King, located on the second floor of the Kresge building on the corner of 6th & Maine. After eight years, he moved into the new professional building located at 8th & Ohio. He cared for many area families for 26 years before going into practice with his son, Dr. Paul Obrock, in 1983, at 8th & Kentucky, with whom he practiced until his retirement in 1995, at the conclusion of a distinguished 40 year career. His formal professional training occurred at a time which- by today's standards of health care- was of a bygone era. However, he never ceased to learn new science, or new techniques and methods to provide exceptional patient care. He was not only a leader in the professional arena, but he was also an excellent mentor and unparalleled role model as a professional and a family man. Ed and Lee were longstanding members of Luther Memorial Church. In the 1960's he was a charter member and council leader of Luther Memorial's mission church, Christ Lutheran. Ed was a 70 year member of both Bodley Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and Quincy Consistory. He was also a member of the Quincy Masonic High Twelve, and Alpha Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Ed served on the Board of Directors of the Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Quincy Sister City Commission. Ed and Lee were active participants with the Sister City exchanges with Herford, Germany, having hosted numerous German guests and participating in two trips to Herford, in 1984 and 1989. Like many others in Quincy, both of Ed's parents descended from residents of Herford and surrounding villages. Dr. Obrock was a Life Member of the American Dental Association and the Illinois State Dental Society. He served the five county western Illinois T.L. Gilmer Dental Society as its' secretary-treasurer for over 20 years, and as president. In his position as president of the local dental society in the 1960's, Dr. Obrock was instrumental in leadership with local public health officials to optimize public water fluoridation in Quincy. This initiative greatly enhanced the public health of the community, created significant healthcare cost savings for families and reduced the number of sick days for schoolchildren. Following his retirement, he was an active volunteer at Blessing Hospital, the Illinois Veteran's Home and with the Give Kids a Smile program. In 1985 his colleagues nominated him for the Illinois State Dental Society Distinguished Member Award for outstanding civic, cultural, religious, and professional achievement. Ed enjoyed listening to and playing music and was first chair clarinetist in the Quincy High School Band, under the direction of Paul Morrison. For many years he played with the Quincy Community Band and Quincy Park Band. Ed was also a member of the Sons of the Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, playing tenor drum. Sponsored by Quincy's American Legion Post 37, the corps won six state championships, six state fair championships and two national championships, held in San Francisco and Miami. As a Korean era veteran, he participated in Honor Flight #16 in October 2012. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Cubs, and held a certificate identifying him as a Die-Hard Cub Fan since 1943. Ed & Lee enjoyed many years of golf, tennis, fresh and salt water fishing, and both domestic and international travel, having visited four continents and most U.S. states. He is survived by his son, Dr. Paul Obrock (Ellen), of Tennessee, two grandsons, Eric Obrock (Shay), of The Woodlands, Texas and Evan Obrock (Paige), of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Cole and Bren of Texas, and Emmett, Henrik, and Alice of Indiana. Visitation: There will be no visitation. Services: A private service with Masonic Rites and interment with military honors will be held at a later date. Interment: will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Memorials: may be made to the Quincy High School Music Department, the Quincy Honor Flight program, or the Quincy Humane Society.
