Elizabeth Pappas Obituary

Elizabeth "Denise" Pappas, 73, of Quincy, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Denise was born September 25, 1951, in Washington, DC to Maurice and Beulah (Bogener) McDonnell. Her journey through life was marked by a commitment to education and a loving partnership with her husband, Leonidas "Lee" Pappas, whom she married on November 12, 1983, in Quincy, IL. Lee's companionship and shared adventures were a cornerstone of Denise's life, and he remains to honor her memory. A graduate of Quincy High School in 1969, Denise's passion for helping others led her to pursue a master's degree in Guidance Counseling from Missouri State in Kirksville. Her career spanned several educational institutions, including Baldwin, Quincy Jr. High, Chaddock School, Quincy Senior High, and ultimately, as a Guidance Counselor at the career center. Denise's dedication to her students and colleagues was evident in her unwavering support and the wisdom she imparted. Beyond her professional endeavors, Denise lived a life full of exploration and joy. Together with Lee, she embarked on a remarkable journey to visit all 49 continental states by car, including a memorable trip to Alaska, and completed the set with a flight to Hawaii. Denise's love for volleyball saw her and Lee officiating games from junior high to college levels, culminating in their officiating at the state finals at the junior high level. Denise's adventurous spirit also shone through in her and Lee's shared passion for outdoor activities. They tackled level 4 & 5 Jeep trails in the mountains of Colorado and braved level 3 & 4 rapids while rafting on the state's streams and rivers. Denise's legacy is carried on by her loving husband, Lee, her two step-children, Lee Pappas (Shante) and Andrea Ausmus, both of California, and her sister, Kim, of St. Louis. Denise was preceded in death by her parents. Cremation is under the direction of O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home. There will be no formal services at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Lee Pappas Quincy Senior High School Academic Scholarship or the Lee Pappas Quincy Senior High School Athletic Scholarship.
