Gary Clapper Obituary

Gary G. Clapper, age 82, of Payson, left this world on December 11, 2024 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Gary was born on February 20th, 1942 in Quincy, IL, the son of Garnett and Esther Hieland Clapper. Gary graduated from Quincy High School in 1960. He was the type of person that could strike up a conversation with anyone he met, especially while delivering an average of 100 packages and 32 pick-ups every day for UPS for 35 years. He loved the people he met on his routes and their families. Gary was known for his gregarious personality, his love of telling jokes, and for his wonderful singing voice. He always seemed to make a memorable, long lasting impression on people; all of which never failed to remember him no matter how much time had passed. Gary loved country music. The Clappers attended countless country music concerts together. Together, they met many famous people. Gary played slow pitch softball at the KC, at the Moose Club, as well as at local parks; he was a skillful pitcher. He also enjoyed deer hunting with family. But it was his love of spending time at home with his wife of 37 years, Julie, and their dogs that he most cherished, along with having family and friends gathered around the pool in the summertime for BBQ's, especially on Father's Day. Gary married Julie L. Hamann on December 12th, 1987, in Quincy, Il. She survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his two daughters, Mrs. Dawn Whitcomb (Charles) of Quincy, IL, and Mrs. Amy Veach (Jamie) of Ursa, IL; his grandson, Sawyer Veach, Ursa, IL; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Wanda Hamann-Salsman of Quincy, IL, and Mrs. Carla Daggett (Gary) Quincy, IL; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews, and very special friends and neighbors, Alex and Lynn House. Gary was preceded in death by: his parents; a grandson Dylan T. Muldoon; his father and mother-in-law, Lester and Jean Hamann; a niece in infancy, Danielle CJ Hamann; and two brothers-in-law, Dennis R. Hamann and John Salsman. Gary's brother-in-law Gary Daggett died April 2, 2025 only a few months after Gary died. Graveside Service: 11:00 am Friday, April 11, 2025, in Greenmount Cemetery, with Rev.
