John Akers Obituary

John Donald Akers, 70, of Quincy, IL passed away at 9:05 pm on Thursday August 1, 2024 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. He was born on August 21, 1953 in Macomb, IL to Dale and Laura (Daily) Akers. He married Diana Lynn Kirkbride in Prairie City, IL on April 28, 2000. She survives. Also Surviving are two children, John D. Akers II of Lincoln, NE; Jennifer Akers-Bent of Versailles, IN; three step children, Tonya (Adam) Hoier of Port St. John, FL; Valerie (Bradon) Juneman of Tucson, AZ; Sara Gade of Bushnell, IL; eight grandchildren, three siblings, Ruth (Rick) Eagle of Abingdon, IL; Gale (Barbara) Akers of Prairie City, IL; and Karl Akers of Bloomington, IL. John was a hard worker and enjoyed helping others. He served as a mechanic in the United State Army for more than 10 years. After the army John attended Western Illinois University earning a BA in Boards of Government. He later went to work for the Illinois Department of Corrections retiring as a Sargent after a 20-year carrier. John was an avid sports fan but he especially loved the St. Louis Cardinals. Graveside services at Prairie City Cemetery will be held on Tuesday August 6, 2024 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Jim Eddy officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Tuesday August 6, 2024 at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the family of John Akers.
