Roberta Jarboe Obituary
Roberta Louise Jarboe, age 92, of Woodlawn, MO, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2025. Roberta was born in rural Shelby County on August 19, 1932, the daughter of Robert Pollard and Beryl Hill Woods. Her appreciation and faith in God started early at the Fairview Baptist Church close to her childhood home near Maud, MO.
Roberta attended the first six grades at Martin School, located southwest of Maud, and was a 1950 graduate of Clarence High School. She married the love of her life, Lawrence Alton "Bud" Jarboe, in 1950 and moved to their "Sleepy Hollow" farm near Woodlawn in Monroe County. They raised six children and actively farmed for over 50 years which involved Roberta driving tractors, hauling grain, and preparing and delivering meals to those in the fields. Bud and Roberta were awarded the District Balanced Farming Award in 1965.
Roberta helped start the Woodlawn 4-H "Sunshiners" Club, was a room-mother at Madison C-3 School for several years, and was a member of the Madison Study Club. She enjoyed the simple things in life such as a morning cup of coffee, spending time outside, crossword puzzles, following Missouri sports teams, and watching and listening to performances by the Gaither Gospel Band. Sewing baby blankets, crocheting afghans, and baking pumpkin and pecan pies for family and friends were favorite traditions. Roberta was devoted to maintaining a large vegetable garden that grew in proportion to the size of her family, and she had a fully stocked cellar for many years to prove it. She also enjoyed mowing her yard whenever possible up until just days before her passing.
Loved by her children and adored by her grandchildren, there is no doubt that her greatest joy was caring for her family, no matter the distance.
Roberta is survived by her six children: Diane Steck (Mark) of Stockton, MO, Gregory Jarboe of Hannibal, MO, Christopher Jarboe (Kay) of Holts Summit, MO, Rochelle Sadler (Ed) of Williamsburg, VA, Angela Wood of Jefferson City, MO, and Alicia Roling (Brian) of Taos, MO; grandchildren: Shawn Meinert, Eric Meinert (Alysia), Tricia Pruett (Isaac), Johnathan Jarboe (Carissa), Holly Garb (Dave), Jennifer Ferguson (Chris), Nicholas Sadler (Jen), J.B. Sadler (Savanna), Jessica Moseley, Joshua Wood (Kim), Lindsay Pennell (Jon), and Brooke Roling (Sebastian); nineteen great-grandchildren (and two more on the way), and several nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by wonderful and helpful neighbors and friends, especially Mike and Lisa Houston, Tracy and Connie Morgan and her special "adopted" granddaughter Emily Morgan Mott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Beatrice Allen, Ferne Boucher and Jane Shoemaker and brothers-in-law Roy Allen, Roy Boucher and Wilfred Shoemaker, and many other loved ones, neighbors and friends.
Roberta's concern for others, curious and inquisitive nature, quick wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Roberta's visitation will be held Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO, directly followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Shelbina immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church (Madison, MO) and St. Mary's Catholic Church (Shelbina, MO).
