Ruth Grimwood Obituary

Ruth Helen Grimwood, 70 of Monticello, Missouri passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025 surrounded by her family at her home after an extended battle with cancer. Ruth was the daughter of Charles George and Henrietta Gertrude "Foppe" Schaefer. She was born on June 30, 1954 in Breese, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Don Grimwood on September 21, 1974 at Resurrection Church in Wellsville, Missouri. They were married over 50 years and have lived in Monticello since 1975. Ruth graduated from Wellsville-Middletown R-1 High School in 1972. She graduated from Culver-Stockton College in 1977 and received a Master's Degree from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville in 1990. She was an elementary teacher (1st & 2nd grades) and librarian at Lewis County C-1 Schools for 31 years, beginning in 1978 and retiring in 2010. She taught at LaBelle Elementary, Ewing Elementary and Highland Elementary, moving to another building as each one closed down. She had many fond memories of former students and co-teachers in each building where she taught. After retiring, Ruth volunteered at the Canton Public Library and in the Quincy Public Schools. She attended Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing, Missouri where she taught CCD classed for many years. She was an active member of MRTA (Mo. Retired Teacher's Assoc.) where she served as Treasurer for several years. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, traveling with her husband, jig-saw puzzles, writing books, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs football games. She is survived by her husband, Don Grimwood of Monticello, Mo.; two daughters, Lisa (Kevin) Novinger of Quincy, Il. and Cheryl (Adam) Hinrichs of Stover, Mo.; three grandchildren, Owen, Ellie and Isla Novinger of Quincy, Il.; three sisters, Mary (Joe) Knaebel of Moberly, Mo., Rita (Robert) Oliver of Wellsville, Mo. and Karen (Ray) Spoor of Martinsburg, Mo.; three brothers, Charles (Janet) Schaefer of Montgomery City, Mo., Norbert (Donna K) Schaefer of Mexico, Mo. and David (Kellie) Schaefer of Princeville, Il.; and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Paul Schaefer and her father and mother-in-law, Ted and Betty Grimwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 21, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing, Missouri with Father Rob Fields officiating. Inurnment will be in the Little Mountain Cemetery in Monticello, Missouri. Visitation will be held Friday, June 20, 2025 from 5 until 8 PM at Arnold's Funeral Home in Canton, Missouri. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Honorary Pallbearers: Charles Schaefer, Norbert Schaefer, David Schaefer, Colleen Anderson and Judy Smith.
