Stephen Moyer Obituary

Stephen Allen Moyer, age 56 of Barry, IL, passed away May 21, 2025 at Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal, MO. He was born on October 31, 1968 to Ray and Sharon (Wingerter) Moyer in Pittsfield, IL. He married Penny Wendorff on December 3, 1994, at the First Christian Church in Barry, IL and she survives along with their son Nicholas Moyer, who recently graduated from Western High School. Stephen graduated from Barry High School in 1986, where his passion for sports began while playing baseball and basketball for the Tigers. He continued pitching at Culver Stockton College for two years on scholarship and finished his college career at ISU with a double major in Economics and Finance. Friends will remember Stephen working for Jack Cruttenden at Frankden Orchards where he met his wife, Penny, through an introduction from her grandmother Velma who urged their meeting. In April of 1995, he started his banking career at First National Bank of Barry, which later became Great Rivers Bank, where he filled many positions. Stephen loved trees and forestry, was passionate about nature, spending spare time outdoors whenever possible mushroom hunting and catfishing. He traveled with Penny and Nicholas adventuring through the national parks but also making time for the beach. Those who knew Stephen can recall his affinity for classic rock and country music, but he will be remembered most as an avid "Parrothead." If there was a St. Louis Cardinals game, Stephen was sure to be watching or listening. His love for baseball and the Cardinals led to his collection of baseball cards, though working as a banker for 30 years lent well to his enjoyment looking at and acquiring coins. He was a perfectionist and always had multiple DIY repairs around the house; he was the perpetual fixer-upper. Stephen was kind, thoughtful, quiet and reserved, made a friend wherever he went, and enjoyed living a simple life at home with his family and his herd of loving dogs who never left his side. Most recently, Stephen coached Nicholas' baseball team throughout his junior and high school years. His patience, field vision, and knowledge about the game promoted the teams' skills, and his quiet strength and endurance urged the players through tough situations and inclement weather so their love of the sport could match his own. He is survived by; his loving wife, Penny Moyer of Barry, IL; son, Nicholas Moyer of Barry, IL; parents, Ray and Sharon Moyer of Barry, IL; sister, Suzanne Davis (Tony) of Martinsville, IL; nieces, Allison Davis and Kaitlin Davis (Clayton); sister-in-law Jane Wendorff-Craps (Jason) and her children Zachary, Michael, Katie, and Kelly; brother-in-law Dale Wendorff (Niki and Alex); and father-in-law, Charles Wendorff. Penny and Nicholas would like to think that Stephen is walking in heaven with a pocket full of rare coins, wearing a red Cardinals jersey, finding a mess of morels, playing Pinochle with Grandma Velma, and always celebrating five o'clock somewhere. He was preceded in death by; his grandparents, Wilbur and Ruth Moyer; mother-in-law, Sherrill Wendorff; and uncle, Jerry "Mac" Moyer. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, June 28th at 5 pm with a visitation from 3-5 pm. Memorials are suggested to the Educational Fund for Nicholas Moyer, or the Western High School FFA. Condolences may be left to the family at nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry, IL is handling the arrangements.
