Daniel Cheetham Obituary

Salem, NH: Daniel Lawrence Cheetham,94, was born August 10, 1931, in Lowell Massachusetts. He passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025, in Salem New Hampshire. He was the youngest of ten children born to Ellen Marie (Garvey) Cheetham and John James Cheetham. He was the last of his family to pass, a generation gone to history. Dad was born to an Irish mom and an English dad but really embraced his inner Irishness. He loved to travel to Ireland, and his favorite holiday was St. Patrick's Day. We always considered our father to be part leprechaun. He loved to tease people often with a twinkle in his eye. Dad married Emily V. Richard in Lawrence Massachusetts in 1952 and together they raised two daughters and four sons in a warm and loving home. Dad served his country honorably in the Korean war. He was a radar technician onboard two destroyers, the USS Isherwood and the USS Abbott, and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. After the war, Dad settled in Andover Massachusetts to raise his family. He attended Merrimack College where he received his Associate's Degree and later graduated from Northeastern University with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and Management. He was employed for many years at AVCO in Lawrence and later Wilmington, MA. At the time of his retirement, he had been employed for thirty-five years at Textron. Dad was a voracious reader and loved to play cards. In his retirement, he was a valued volunteer at two libraries, one in Hampstead, New Hampshire and the other in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he and our mom spent their winters. He was proud of his time serving at the weekly cocktail parties at The Mark in Cocoa Beach. He also had a love-hate relationship with the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. A former resident of Hampstead from 1997 until he moved to Salem five years ago, he was a member of Saint Anne's Parish in Hampstead. He was predeceased by his wife Emily in 2006 and is survived by his six children, Daniel E Cheetham and his wife Sheila of Wexford, Pa. Ellen M. Noonan and her husband Dan of Durango, Colorado, John R. Cheetham and his wife wife Gina of Waltham, MA, Linda J. Lemieux and her husband Jay of Gilmanton, NH, Chris J. Cheetham and his companion Diane of Uxbridge, Mass. and Larry H. Cheetham and his wife Darlene of Tewksbury, Mass. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and by his devoted companion of eighteen years, Cleta Barry of Hampstead, New Hampshire. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours to be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, August 29, 2025, at 10 AM from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. Anne's Church, Emerson Ave., Hampstead, NH. Burial will follow in Saint Mary-Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence, MA, with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to your local library.
