William H. Barnes

William H. "Bill" Barnes, 85, of Andover, MA, passed away on October 11, 2025, in Haverhill, MA. He was born in Lawrence on April 14, 1940, son of the late Raymond L. and Alice (Hall) Barnes. Raised in Andover, Mr. Barnes was known for his generosity and intelligence. He graduated from Andover High School in 1958 and from Lowell Technological Institute in 1961 with a degree in optical engineering. Mr. Barnes was employed by ITEK Corporation of Lexington, MA, for more than forty years. Among his proudest professional achievements were his contributions to the development of cameras used on NASA's Viking 1 expedition to Mars and the Hubble Space Telescope. A lifelong member of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, Mr. Barnes was committed to service and community. As a father, he served as a troop leader with the Boy Scouts of America, and in retirement, he helped recruit engineering students for his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty years, Judith (Sutton) Barnes; his son, Glenn Barnes; and brother, Raymond Barnes, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Marcy Barnes, of Somerville, MA, and his grandchildren, Ewan Henrie and Zoe (Barnes) Donahue, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Barnes leaves behind many treasured friends, including his "second family" at Haverhill Crossings. Arrangements are in the care of H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Bradford–Haverhill. A memorial service will be held in the spring to celebrate his life.
