Artie Gundling Obituary

Artie Lee Gundling, age 94, of LaFeria Texas passed away on February 22, 2023, in Harlingen Texas. He was born December 19, 1928, in Hannibal, Mo., to George Paul and Minnie Bell (Frankum) Gundling.

Art was married January 4, 1948, to Shirley Ann Muehring and had three sons, Steven (Kathy) of Friendswood, TX, Mark (Linda) of Hannibal, and Dennis (Elena) of Port Isabel, TX. Also surviving were grandchildren Jeffrey, Jeremy, Brittni, Darren, Michael, Robert, Alexis, Paul, and Audriana, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

While living in Hannibal, Art was an owner of two service stations, worked at Hannibal/Quincy Truck Lines, Mark Twain Supply, Apples Auto Parts, and lastly at Quincy Compressor. He usually always had a part time job to provide for his family. After moving to La Feria, TX in 1983, he was a private contractor doing remodeling, room additions, and general repairs.

After Shirley passed away suddenly on February 13, 1992, he met his second wife, Berneta (Neta) Marie Marken, and they were married January 13, 1993. With this marriage, he gained two more sons, Scott and Brady Marken, three daughters, Terry Willis-Cathcart, Gail and Gina Marken, and several grandchildren.

Art and Neta had more than twenty years together, traveling in their RV visiting both sides of the family while exploring and collecting anything that caught their fancy. They lived in Texas and enjoyed friends they had among winter Texans in the trailer park and at their church, La Feria First Methodist.

When Neta's health began to fail, Art cared for her the last years of her life until she passed in March 2012. Art slowed down his traveling as his health worsened, he was lovingly cared for by Neta's youngest daughter, Gina, for his last four years.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Walter, and Kenneth.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 AM on March 18, 2023, at the Park United Methodist Church and cremation burial at Grand View Burial Park. Memorials may be made to Park United Methodist Church.

Artie ( and he didn´t like that name) and I spent lots of time on the phone trying to fix his computer when he couldn´t get his email. I had an old computer set up to match his so we could be looking at the same screen.
We came down to LaFeria with another couple. We got to go deep sea fishing (a two day event since one of the motors had to be worked on the first day). Then we went to Mexico. Every trip to Art´s and Mom´s place involved a trip to Mexico.
He loved cats (not at first...Mom had to do some talking). They traveled with the cats and Art had them trained to go on walks with him without a leash. After Mom died, he came to Wyoming. He put the cats in a shelter thinking that he was done with cats. When he came home he missed them horribly and Gina suggested he go to the shelter to see if any were left. He got two of his cats back. When I would call him he would always give me the cat report.
He loved his trips to visit family. They traveled trying to hit every state in the contiguous 48 and almost made it. They told stories of taking the motor home into a tunnel and the motor home being too big for the tunnel and the process of backing out.
When Gina got her country place in Mulvane, Art loved it. He would spend hours with Gina picking up wire and trash that was left on the property. He got to put his skills to good use with repairs on the place.
He was great to Mom when she began going downhill. He was beside her all the way.
Thursday night was choir practice and Sunday morning was church with him singing in the choir. I got to go with him to choir practice and went to church with them. He was so excited when he got promoted to choir director.
My most precious memories of Art were sitting in the hospital cafeteria, and talking about what God had done in our lives.
Gina, my sister, took care of Art in his last years when his memory was gone. I would retell him stories of things we had done and hard thought it was for him he would admit he couldn´t remember.
I thank God for putting Art in our lives. I thank God for his selflessness in caring for our mother. I thank God for my sister Gina who was there for him when he needed her.
