Barbara Ann Sweeney, 84, of Houston, Texas passed away to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. She battled her lengthy illness gracefully before peacefully leaving for her Heavenly home surrounded by family.
She was a faithful Christian, Loving Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, and friend. She was born on September 6, 1938, in Quincy, Illinois to John and Mary Lunsford.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and married Gene R. Sweeney in 1963. They were married for 59 years and had four children and seven grandchildren who lovingly called her Granny B. Barbara enjoyed music, traveling, playing, and watching tennis, spending time with her family, and gardening.
Barbara loved to sing. During high school, she was in a singing quartet called the Harmonettes and in later years she sang in her church choir. She was an international traveler and combined with her love of tennis, traveled to many tennis tournaments. Barbara never missed an opportunity to help her children and grandchildren in their gardens or pull some weeds. She took immense pride and spent many hours maintaining her yard.
Barbara always encouraged and supported her children and grandchildren's various endeavors. The neighbor children called her Barbie, and she always ensured they each had a treat. Barbara was a very generous gift giver and an excellent bargain shopper who enjoyed the hunt. She is already deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John David Lunsford, and her parents, Mary Lamont (Cannon) Lunsford and John Henry Lunsford.
Barbara is survived by her husband Gene Richard Sweeney, sister Mary Lou Rogers, brother Stephen Lee Lunsford, children Carrie Annette Halvachs, Catherine Jean Hinton, Steven Patrick and wife Cathy Rene Sweeney, Kimberly Cannon Host, and grandchildren Shannon Sweeney, Heather Hinton, Cameron Host, Olivia Hinton, Jack Sweeney, Camille Host, and Collin Host.

I met Barbara at church camp many years ago. The Lunsford Family became special friends when I attended nurses training in Quincy. I am forever grateful.
