Carl Eugene Cook, Sr., age 76, of Payson, Illinois passed away at 7:04 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2025 at his residence.
He was born April 5, 1949 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois the son of Lafe William and Irene Dyer Cook. He married Shirley Eldridge on August 10, 1968 and later married Joni Lefringhouse on July 7, 1990. Joni preceded him in death on January 29, 2025.
Carl was an owner/operator truck driver for several years, also driving for Sharkey Transportation in Quincy, Illinois where he had dedicated route to Boston for many years. Carl truly loved telling the numerous stories about his truck driving career.
He graduated from Unity High School in Mendon, Illinois with the class of 1967.
Carl was an avid sports fan who earlier in life helped coach his children's little league teams and especially liked watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
He also enjoyed the time spent with his family whether that was a game in the backyard or simply playing cards around the table.
Survivors include seven children, Carl Cook Jr. (Kelly) of Kirkland, WA: Tracy Cook of Winston-Salem, NC; Lyle Cook (Jessica) of Quincy, IL; Josh Cook (Barbie) of Tooele, UT; Chad Cook of Quincy, IL; Jena Bowman (Patrick) of Belleville, IL; and Jered Cook of Payson, IL.
12 grandchildren: Lafe, Kyle, Maddie, Seth, Noah, Nathaniel, Brooklyn, Wil, Reese, Denali, Brantley, and Harper; and five great grandchildren: Malia, Aries, Lillyanna, Penelope and Rosalie.
Two sisters Janet (Harlan) Timpe of Donnelson, IA, and Joan (Rock) Weeks of Mendon, IL; brother-in-law Joseph Meyer of Pekin, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Carl was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister Donna Meyer.
Cremation will be accorded and private inurnment will be on the family lot of the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that you make a donation to Cardinals Care and help children in need. The memorial donations may be left at or mailed to the Hendricker Funeral Home, 406 South Capitol Avenue, Mt. Sterling, Illinois 62353.
