Carolyn was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Wilson, Ark., a daughter of James A. and Ora Sims Gwaltney. On July 26, 1952, she married William J. Devaney. He died in 1967. On June 18, 1977, she married Verges Van Wickle. He died in 1987.

She graduated in 1941 from Ward-Belmont, Nashville, Tenn. She later graduated from Duke University in 1944. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

In the late 1940s, Mrs. Van Wickle worked for Eastern Airlines as a flight stewardess.

In 2009, Carolyn left her home in Hot Springs, Ark., to be closer to her family.

She was a gracious Southern lady who embraced Southern living. Carolyn enjoyed traveling, music and classic cinema. She was an avid reader, always keeping up on current events. Her love and zest for life will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Jewel Gwaltney of Quincy; two nieces, Carolyn Jane (Timothy) Brown of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Kathleen (Gary) Taylor of Quincy; her nephew, James A. Gwaltney III of Quincy; a great-niece, Mary Jewel Brown of West Bloomfield; and four great-nephews, Conor and Phillip Brown of West Bloomfield and Kenny and Kyle Taylor of Quincy.

In addition to her husbands; she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James A. Gwaltney Jr., M.D.; and her sister, Bettye J. Gwaltney.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Monday in the Memphis Memorial Park, Memphis, Tenn., with the Rev. Deborah Suddarth conducting.

VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday in Memphis Memorial Park Funeral Home, Memphis, Tenn.

MEMORIALS: Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
