Delores O'Neal Obituary

Delores "Lorie" O'Neal, 91, formerly of 1123 S. 16th, Quincy, died peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday (Feb. 4, 2012) at Good Samaritan Home.

She was born Dec. 27, 1920, in St. Louis, a daughter of Frank and Josephine Schindler Schnable. She married Robert C. O'Neal on Dec. 20, 1944, at All Souls Catholic Church in Overland, Mo. Her parents, brother Joseph, and husband preceded her in death.

Lorie graduated from Ritenour High School in St. Louis in 1938. She received business training while working at Schindler's Market of St. Louis. During World War II, she was employed by the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. In 1949, she returned to the Midwest and maintained a household in Quincy. She was an excellent seamstress, employed for many years by Carson Pirie Scott.

Lorie was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, the Altar Society, and had served as a Cub Scout leader.

She was a supporter of the arts and was a season ticket holder for the Quincy Community Theatre. Lorie continued to support the Quincy Table Tennis Club founded by her husband, and supplied trophies for the annual Robert O'Neal Youth Table Tennis Tournament.

Lorie lived her life with grace, kindness and amazing generosity. A loving mother, grandmother and friend, she had a knack for making anyone feel comfortable; and truly cared about every person she met. Delicious chocolate chip cookies were her hallmark and were enjoyed by lucky recipients both near and far. One of her favorite pastimes was line dancing. Lorie had a wonderful sense of humor and always saw the bright side of life. She was the first to step up and help others of which there were many. She will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include five sons, Patrick O'Neal and his wife, Cindy, of St. Louis, Michael O'Neal and his wife, Connie, of Quincy, Timothy O'Neal and his wife, Lydia, of Hamilton, Daniel O'Neal and his wife, Lori, of Stevens Point, Wis., and Michael M. Hello to all of the O'Neal family members. Lorie was like a second mom to me when I was growing up in Quincy. She was a loving, kind and special lady and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

My deepest sympathies go out to "Pat, Mike, Tim, and Danny" (whatever you might be called now, you will always stair-step that way in my memory). Aunt Lorie was a powerful presence in her sweet way--when I was a tiny child, I literally thought she was an angel. I see her in my mind's eye surrounded by galloping, rollicking boys, who she--with my Uncle Bob--raised to be delightful, interesting men. She was quick to laugh and always made us children feel fine just the way we were. Good journey, Aunt Lorie!

I have so many fond memories of summertime visits to Quincy. Aunt Lorie always seemed to spread sunshine on every occasion. I always felt a special bond with her as she was my Godmother. She always went out of her way to remember me at Christmas and birthdays. I am sad that my husband and daughter never had a chance to meet her, but I have spoken of her often throughout the years and all our thoughts and prayers are with the O'Neals and extended family.

I have loved Lorie even before she and Bob were dating.
She was always loving and I'm proud to say she
is my sister-- not just in-law. My prayers are with her
loving family whom she taught well. I send my love to
one and all.

I would like to express my heatfelt condolances to all my Cousins and their famiies.. Although I didn't see Aunt Lorie for many many years I never forgot what wonderful fun I always had with her when visiting in Quincy as a child. She was so funny and sweet and I loved our visits with all the family.
She and the family are in my prayers, and my thoughts.
