Doris J. Sweeting

Doris J. Sweeting, 90, of Clayton, IL, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Born February 8, 1935, in Brown County, Illinois, Doris was the daughter of Robert and Gladys Clark Grist. She married Wayne D. Sweeting on July 31, 1952, in Quincy. He preceded her in death on October 16, 2006.

Doris enjoyed traveling, riding Gold Wing motorcycles, dancing, and especially decorating for Christmas-something she looked forward to each year. She loved her cowgirl boots, diamond art, and noodle making.

Doris worked alongside her husband, operating Sweeting Motor Service and Sweeting Gift Shop in Clayton for many years.

Survivors include her son, Russ Sweeting of Clayton; her daughter, Beth Spann and her husband Steve, also of Clayton; her grandchildren: Allen Sweeting and his wife Jenny of Columbia, MO; Chris Johnson of Clayton; Katrina Nixon and her husband Kale of Kahoka, MO; and Kandy (Renee) Spann of Barry. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Maddox, Braxton, Lexy, Zeke Sweeting, Valerie (Luke) Shinn, Jorden (Molly) Still, Jakob (Jaelyn) Still, Koy, Kayne, Kennyck, and Kyper Nixon, and her great-great-granddaughter, Charlotte Still.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Virginia Couch; and her brother, Robert Lee Grist.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the First Federated Church of Clayton. Burial will follow at Lierly Cemetery, Clayton.

Visitation will be held Monday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Home in Clayton.
