Ellouise Houston Obituary

PALMYRA, Mo. -- Ellouise Katherine Houston, 92, of Palmyra, died 5:57 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 6, 2015) at her home.

Ellouise was born Dec. 17, 1922, near Palmyra to Adolf F. and Frieda M. Happel Hoenes. She married Archie L. Houston on Aug. 23, 1942, in Palmyra. He died Nov. 26, 1995.

Ellouise worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, Va., from 1942 to 1945. She later worked at C&R Market in Palmyra for several years and at American Safety in Palmyra for several years. She was a graduate of Palmyra High School and Spencer Business College.

She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Palmyra and helped with Bingo Night for many years. Ellouise started the Avenue of Flags for Memorial Day at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.

She was a lifelong and faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra.

Ellouise is survived by daughters, Archella K. (Don) Sharkey of Hannibal, Mo., Diana S. (James) Stewart of Platte City, Teri L. (Rendell) Hoenes of Lake St. Louis, and Kim L. (Joseph) Harmon of Fort Madison, Iowa; a son, Raymond E. (Amy) Houston of Palmyra; and a sister, Wanda M. Mescher of Kansas City, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Hoenes; a grandson, Samuel Houston; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Houston.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra. The Rev. David Johnson will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.

Casket bearers will be Ryan Sharkey, Darin Sharkey, Kalin Sharkey, Greg Stewart, Jeff Basch, Joel Harmon, Tim Harmon, Zac Hoenes, and Chad Szarka.

VISITATION: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, in the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.

MEMORIALS: Zion Lutheran Church, Community Loving Care Hospice or Palmyra Nutrition Center .

ARRANGEMENTS: Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel, Palmyra.
