Frederick A. Chanen

1937 - 2022

Frederick Alan Chanen, age 85, of Quincy, died Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at 3:42 pm in Blessing Hospital.

Fred was born June 18, 1937, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Max and Zelda Iskovitz Chanen. He attended freshman and sophomore years at Quincy High School before transferring and graduating from Kemper Military School in Booneville, MO. Fred married Carole Heney Dee on November 28, 1959, in Los Angeles, CA. Carole proceeded Fred in death on November 22, 1994, just days before their 35th wedding anniversary. Carole was his soulmate and he mourned her for the rest of his life. Fred and Carole maintained their lives in Quincy until briefly moving to Los Angeles in 1989. After his wife's passing, Fred moved back to Quincy for the remainder of his life.

Fred is survived by son Mark Chanen and his wife Tracy Coskie of Bellingham, WA and their sons Ashenafi and Tesfa, and daughter Cindy and her husband Tim McShane of Quincy, IL and their sons Adam, Matthew and Michael; brother-in-law Myron Kirsch and sons Jeffrey Kirsch, Michael and wife Ilana Kirsch, and Gregory and wife Lanie Kirsch; nieces Lisa Dee and Vicki Dee Rock and husband David and may other beloved relatives.

Fred spent the majority of his career in the family business, Chanen's Auto Supply. Later in life, he worked over 10 years at K's Merchandise. For decades, Fred was a licensed ham radio operator and was a member of the Western Illinois Amateur Radio Club. Fred had a life-long love of motorcycles and owned many throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Fred shared this passion with his son Mark and his Quincy friends. Fred was a member of B'Nai Shalom Temple and the Masonic Temple. Fred and Carole shared a happy life in Quincy raising their children and enjoying temple events, Quincy Community Theatre, Sheridan Swim Club, The Patio, and traveling the world. Fred was the kind of person who could talk to anyone about anything and was a friend to everyone.  Besides spending time with Carole and his family, Fred loved animals and always had beloved dogs he raised in the family home. Fred loved the United States and always respected and loved to talk about the Armed Forces.

In addition to his beloved wife, Fred was preceded in death by his parents Max and Zelda, beloved sister Dianne Kirsch, his parents-in-law Bernice and Harry Dee, and sister-and brother-in-law Peggy and Roger Dee.

Services: 2:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time), Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Hillside Cemetery, Culver City, California with Rabbi Alan Lachtman officiating.

Burial: Hillside Cemetery, Culver City, California.
