Gary E. Viar

Gary E. Viar, 82, of Fowler, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Gary was born June 12, 1942, in Quincy, IL to Emerson and Viola (Clark) Viar. On September 7, 1983, Gary married his beloved wife, Rita Jameson, in Colorado Springs, CO. Their union was one of mutual respect, love, and shared joys. Rita survives him, carrying forward the memories of their life together.

Gary's legacy is also carried on by his four children, Terri Morris (Kenneth) of Quincy, Greg Viar (Deborah) of Quincy, Brian Viar (Lori) of Liberty, IL, and Jared Viar (Kara) of Paloma, IL; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Shankland (Mike); two brothers in-law, Charles Jameson Jr. (Debbie) of Columbia, MO and Wesley Jameson (Debbie) of Center, MO; and two sisters in-law, Carol Jameson of Columbia, MO and Tricia Hart (Ben) of Olathe, KS. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; one son in-law, Bill Hollander; and miniature schnauzer, Parker.

A graduate of Liberty High School in 1960, Gary dedicated 31 years to serving his community as a Deputy Sheriff for Adams/Hancock County. His commitment to safety and justice extended to his roles as a Bailiff in Court Security for the 8th Judicial Circuit, a bus driver for Liberty Public Schools, and a security officer for Quincy Public Schools. Gary was also a respected 32nd degree Mason, a testament to his strong values and character.

Gary's life outside of work was rich with hobbies and passions. An avid outdoorsman, he relished the times he spent hunting, fishing, and camping at Table Rock Lake. His hands were rarely still, as he loved collecting and working on guns, a skill honed at the Smith & Wesson Gun School. Tractors were another fascination for Gary; he not only tinkered with them but also enjoyed the thrill of tractor pulls.

Music and television were sources of joy for Gary. Old country tunes would fill the air whenever the radio was on, and he could often be found watching history documentaries and Westerns on TV. But above all, Gary's heart belonged to his friends and family. He was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved, sharing stories and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Friends and Family are invited to Gary's Life Celebration at a visitation that will be Monday, May 19, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy, IL. A Funeral Ceremony will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Steve Disseler officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Cemetery in Liberty, IL.

Pallbearers will be Cyle Viar, Dylan Viar, Rich Johnston, Brandon Hamilton, Logan Hamilton, and Jeff Wiemelt. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gerry Pickle, Curtis Terwelp, Cliff Cornett, Jerry Carl, John Meyer, and Scott Graham.

Memorial contributions may be made to Homeward Bound Waggin', Alzheimer's Association, or Liberty Cemetery.
