George Fiddes Black, age 99, of Quincy, through tears and prayers and gentle hands was given over to the care of God on Friday, November 22, 2024.
He was born January 6, 1925 in Taunton, MA the son of William and Helen A. Currie Black. On December 25, 1971 he married Jeanette Ann "Chris" Black in Luther Memorial Church, Quincy, IL.
He was a 1943 graduate of Taunton High School, Taunton, MA, attended West Palm Beach Junior College and graduated in 1951 from John B. Stetson University in Deland, Florida. He served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot during WWII.
He was an accountant for Minute Maid Corp. from 1951-1958, for Chun King Corp. from 1958-1962, and for Davis Cleaver Corp. from 1965-1975. He and his wife Chris owned and operated the Jean and John Shop from 1975 -1989.
George was a founding member of Hope Lutheran Church where he was the church treasurer. He was a former member of Luther Memorial Church where he served on the Church Council, Property Committee and the Audit Committee. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #535, Elks Lodge #100, American Legion Post #37, the Exchange Club of Quincy, where he was past president, the Personnel Club, the Independent Accountant Association of Illinois, and a former member of Toastmasters Club. George loved to attend ice cream socials and dances.
Survivors include six children: Ann (Larry) Sinak of Rochester, MN; Geordie Black of Jacksonville, IL;
Michael (Toni) Black of Quincy, IL; Diane (Kent) Rich Vannier of Conway, SC; Sally (Allen) Rich Artz of
Quincy, IL; and Martha (Mark) Rich Huelsmeyer of Quincy; eight grandchildren: Leslie and Michal, Michelle
and Timon, Molly, Gregory, Mandy and Amy; four great-grandchildren, Nathan Link, Jillian Kirkpatrick,
Miriam Blomenkamp, and Aly Young; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: William, Robert, and James Black; and five sisters:
Dorothy Nason, Ruth Stafford, Helen Parenteau, Beverly Williams, and Rose Gould.
Visitation: 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home
Services: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Dennis officiating.
Inurnment: Ellington Home Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 37 and the
United States Army Funeral Honors Detail.
