J. Kim Obituary

Dr. J. Hoon Kim, 45, of Quincy died on Wednesday (Nov. 3, 2010) in Houston, Texas, due to complications following open heart surgery.

Hoon was born Sept. 3, 1965, in Seoul, South Korea, the son of Dr. Yang Ho Kim and In Ho Shin. His father had a successful obstetrics practice on the first floor of their family home. Here, Hoon witnessed the birth of his cousin, Jay. Hoon recalled holding the baby for hours at a time while his aunt was at the hospital. Hoon held this experience in his heart, and it gave him the ambition he needed to succeed as an immigrant child in America.

Hoon and his parents, along with his sister, Anne, and his brother, David, immigrated to the Bronx, N.Y., in June 1973. From the Bronx, they moved to Lakeland, Fla., and eventually settled in Washington, Mo.

Hoon's high school life was focused on his passion for football (playing defensive and offensive guard and Senior Captain), baseball, and wrestling. Hoon loved competing in Scholar Bowl and was voted "Most Likely To Succeed." He graduated from Washington High School in 1984 as class valedictorian.

He was accepted into the six-year combined B.A. and M.D. program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Here, in addition to academic achievements, he played rugby and made many new friends. A highlight of his college years was traveling to L.A. with only cash and a pair of sunglasses in hand.

Following college, Hoon entered OB-Gyn residency at Truman Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. During this time, he honed his art of delivering babies and his surgical skills. On his first day of residency, he claimed the love of his life, Suzan, as his own.

Hoon and Suzan married Aug. 2, 1997, on a hot St. Louis day. Their life together began in Edwardsville, Ill., where Hoon practiced with the Women's Center of Metro East. He took great pride in providing his patients with competent, exceptional care.

In 2001, they moved to Quincy, where Hoon practiced with Quincy Medical Group, delivering babies at Blessing Hospital. Friends there will miss his thundering steps as he raced to deliveries.

His favorite of all births were those of his own children, Madison (12), Molly (10), and Morgan (4). Hoon was proud of being an "Mx3" dad, coaching their soccer and softball teams, and planning the family trips. The girls will miss attending Mizzou football games together, as well as his silliness, his energy, and his falling asleep during bedtime stories.

In addition to Hoon's overwhelming love for his family, his life was characterized by his fervor for Mizzou football, hitting home runs on the Gem City softball team, eating spicy BBQ, and writing the annual Christmas card to include his staunch Republican viewpoints.

Hoon was an active member of St. John's Anglican Parish. He belonged to the Adams County Medical Society, the Illinois State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was a Diplomat, American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology-1997.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Madison, Molly and Morgan, all of Quincy; his parents of Holmdel, N.J.; his sister, Anne (Samuel) Ahne and their children, Anson and Katie of Morganville, N.J.; and his brother, David (Min Jung) Kim and their children, Daniel and Victoria, of Littleton, Colo.

He is also survived by his wife Suzan's family, her parents, Ken and Donna Neely; and her brother, Kyle (Debbie) Neely, all of El Dorado Springs, Mo., her brother Les (Cyndi) Neely of Independence, Mo.; along with six nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and great-nephews.

Hoon also leaves behind a large extended family, many loving friends, medical colleagues, and patients.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and a cousin, Andy Chung.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Anglican Parish (701 Hampshire) with the Rev. Patrick Smith officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

VISITATION: 4-7 p.m. Friday at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.

I can't really put into words how saddened I am by this. Dr. Kim was a HERO to me, getting me through my second pregnancy (following a first terrible delivery by a different doctor in another part of the state). I can't even express how blessed our family was by his care and concern- his confidence made me feel confident. Then he got me through a scary 2 months with our third child. We all loved him, and Moses (our first child) loved coming in to see him during my OB appointments. Moses still talks about Dr. Kim! We are praying for you all.

To my dear friend Hoon. I will forever miss your roaring laugh, your huge smile and your wonderful sense of humor. We had so many good times at Mizzou games. I will think of you every time I walk into the stadium. Peace to you and your wonderful family.

The man Dr. Kim was so warm and caring, but the Dr. he was is no more then what you wish you could have forever.. His intelligence and medical knowledge was outstanding. I don't live in Quincy any longer but it just made me sick when I heard.. I am sad that a man who was so good and caring, loyal and loving to his family and friends has left us... But he did leave some angels for us to remember him by.. We all loved you Dr. Kim.. including me.. Pamela Finney

Dr. Kim was also my Dr. He performed my surgery about 7 months ago. He never once let on that he had medical problems of his own. He was that way though. He was always very concerned about you as a patient & person. I feel he literaly saved my life. I have never had a Dr. as compassionate or caring as Dr. Kim. My heart goes out to his family. He will be greatly missed not only by the medical field, but by his patients & nurses alike.

Dr. Kim is a wonderful and talented individual. Proof of this is shown by what a wonderful father he is. Maddison, Molly and Morgan show the good that comes from their father and mom. I wish I could do or say something to make it easier. May memories and his gifts he has brought to our community bring you more peace with each passing day. Prayers from our family...Doug,Gloria, Bryce, Allyson and Kayla Hoener

Mrs. Kim & Daughters:
I saw Dr. Kim almost daily in the hallways of Blessing Hospital, and he was always friendly and spoke to me. I also saw him at various medical staff meetings as a part of my job, and I admired his "passion" during discussions that were important to him regarding providing quality care for patients at Blessing Hospital. One thing I'll always remember is how much Dr. Kim liked "Miss Vickie's Jalapeno Potato Chips"...he would get them for lunch at the noon Department of OB/GYN meetings whenever they were available in the Cafeteria! I will miss him at those meetings! May the precious memories of your husband and father sustain you during this time of sorrow, and may it help to know that many are grieving with you, and praying for you.

We are saddened in Washington, MO to learn of the loss of Hoon. He is remembered as an energetic football player and medical student. It seems that his medical student rotation in our practice was more recent than the calendar proves it was. It is obvious from the other comments on this site that he became a fine physician, husband, and father. The physicians at Family Health Care in Washington, Mo send their condolences to his wife, parents, and daughters.

I will pray for the family and friends of Dr. Kim. I knew him in High School, I took him to my Senior Prom at St. Francis Borgia High School. It was a night filled with fun and so much laughter! Come on Eileen was the song of the night...we even visited the buffalo at Lone Elk Park, K-SHE 95 was the radio station...he was an outstanding person and friend. We are so sorry for your loss. Dr. Kim was an amazing doctor. He opened the door to every visit with a smile and hug. He was a friend, advocate, and knew just what to say right when you needed it. He made us all feel that we were his his only/favorite patient. He listened, reassured, and celebrated with us. I was blessed to have him as a doctor for 10 years and am so grateful for the care I received. Our prayers are with you and your family. God Bless!

Dr Kim was my doctor and by far, one of the best. He delivered both my daughter and son, in which I had scares in both pregnancies. I considered him a friend and admired how much he loved his job and went out of his way for his patients. My only hope is that his children realize what a great individual he was. He touched many hearts and will be sadly missed.

Dr Kim will be greatly missed. As his patients we can tell you with great certainty how passionate he was about his job. He had a unique and sincere understanding of how medical changes and events impacted the family unit. Thank you Dr. Kim for our two beautiful babies that were "made by God and delivered by Dr. Kim". You will always be remembered as being the very first person to sing Happy Birthday to our children. May you rest in peace. Christina & Jeremy Rose
