Joan Ruth Carlyle

Joan Ruth Carlyle, 89, of Palmyra, formerly of Quincy, Ill., died Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Decatur, Ill. to Harry and Beulah (Nowlin) O'Heren.

As a child, her family moved to Quincy. In 1949, she graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing with an R.N. degree and then worked there as a nurse. She later received a bachelor of science degree in sociology at Quincy College.

While still living in Quincy, she was a secular Franciscan for over 50 years, a Lady in the Knights of Columbus, served as a communion minister at a nursing home and a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. In later years, she also worked as an R.N. in the U.S. Military Hospitals in South Carolina.

Joan is survived by her children, Patrick (Julie) Carlyle, Douglas Carlyle, Daniel (Cindy) Carlyle and Barbara (Ken) Burnett; 10 grandchildren; one brother, John O'Heren; two sisters, Rosemary Westfallen and Patricia O'Connor; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark Carlyle; her brother, Charles O'Heren; and her sister, Helen O'Heren.

SERVICES: 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 17, at the funeral home with a secular Franciscan service at 5:30 p.m.
