John Henry Phillips

1930 - 2018

John Henry Phillips, 87, of Plymouth, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at his home.

John was born Oct. 2, 1930, in Huntsville, to Burtis "Mike" and Kate Hale Phillips. He married Mary Ruth Roberts on June 30, 1957, at Huntsville Methodist Church. She survives.

John was a farmer and had also been employed over the years with Triple S Coal Mines, Rollo Robbins Bull-Dozing, Augusta Farmers Co-op, D & M Earthmoving, Double A Trucking, Burton Trucking and Mark Daniels Trucking. He was a 1948 graduate of Augusta High School and attended the Living Faith United Methodist Church, Bowen. John served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a life member of the Plymouth American Legion Post No. 912 and a life member of Denver Lodge No. 0464 AF & AM and was a member of the Schuyler County Farm Bureau.

Surviving along with his wife, Mary Ruth, are a son, John Jay Phillips of Plymouth; a daughter, Lori Ann (Rex) Schulz of Quincy; grandchildren, Stephanie Schulz Laughlin of Columbia, Mo., Courtney (Levi) Lockett of Quincy, Chad Schulz of Quincy, Mitch (Lindsey) Phillips of Augusta, Mikayla (Michael) Schone of Bowen and Jacy Phillips of Keokuk, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Brennan and Carson Laughlin of Columbia, Hunter, Hayden and Hadley Phillips of Augusta, Amber and Aaron Schone of Bowen; nieces and nephews, Joyce Neill Thompson, Laura Beth (Larry) Roberts, Paul (Jackie) Neill, Susie (Dan) McDonald and Kim (Missy) Phillips.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leslie Phillips; three sisters, Idelle DeFilppis, Roberta (Bertie) Neill and Pauline Jones; a nephew, Michael Neill; and his father and mother-in-law, Virgil Roberts and Mildred Roberts Brough.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Living Faith United Methodist Church, Bowen, with the Rev. Sheri Renner conducting. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Augusta, with military honors.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at the church.

MEMORIALS: Living Faith United Methodist Church or Plymouth American Legion Post No. 912.
