Julio del Castillo Obituary

Dr. Julio Cesar del Castillo, 82, of 2600 Shady Lane, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 16, 2012) in Blessing Hospital.

Julio was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Havana, Cuba, a son of Julio Cesar del Castillo and Violeta diaz de Villegas. He married Rosario Freire on Sept. 15, 1955, in Havana. She died Feb. 18, 2008.

Dr. del Castillo was a graduate of Columbus High School and the University of Havana. He was a graduate of Havana Medical School in Cuba. He and his wife moved for his internships to Chicago in 1955 for two years, to Boston for one year, and then to Philadelphia for two years before returning to Cuba. They repatriated to the United States in 1961 and moved to Quincy in 1965. He joined Dr. Felix Martin in private neurosurgery practice, retiring in 1991.

Doctor was a member of First Union Congregational Church and the Quincy Rotary Club, where he was past president, and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on many committees and boards at Blessing Hospital. After retirement, he and Rosario owned Top Hat Hobby Shop. He also loved to fly.

Survivors include two sons, Julio del Castillo and Juan (Barbara) del Castillo, both of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Rosemarie del Castillo of Champaign; a granddaughter, Emily Topper of Orlando; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elvira and Raul Bover of Quincy; a nephew, Paul Bover of Champaign; three nieces, Elena Lock and Rosario Bover, both of Quincy, and Raquel (Richard) Karpinski of Roselle; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Katie, Joshua and Lydia Lock, and Emily and Allison Karpinski.

Julio was also preceded in death by his parents.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Wentzel conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: Quincy Rotary Foundation.

In 1976 my family and I were in a car accident and I would not be here if it was not for Dr Del Castillo. He was a great doctor and wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
