Mac Bennett, 92, of Quincy, Illinois, died peacefully Sunday morning (May 16, 2021) at home in his sleep.
Born September 3, 1928 in Quincy, Illinois, Mac was the son of Frank and Hilda Bennett. He married Margaret "Margie" Elouise Allen Bennett on September 10, 1951 in a small ceremony in Denver, Colorado. Margie passed away on November 24, 1997.
Mac was a graduate of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Law (Class of 1952). He was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. From there, he went on to study law at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he met Margie. After graduating from law school (Class of 1952), he joined the US Air Force and became a Captain in the JAG Corps.
Mac was the owner of Roy Bennett Furniture, the third generation in the family business. He loved the furniture business. He first started working at "the store" for his grandfather in high school and, after returning to Quincy in 1955, continued to go to the store daily right up until the pandemic prevented it. He was a devoted fan of QHS basketball, college football and basketball, and "Rat Pack" music. But, without a doubt, his favorite activity was eating meals out with his grandchildren- and in particular, meals consisting primarily of "ice cream".
Mac was a long-time member of First Union Congregational Church and held numerous positions on the board of Transitions of Western Illinois from 1962-1995, including two terms as president. In 1995, he received the Illinois Community Behavioral Health Association's Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to the mental health field.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ann) Wright of Quincy and Mrs. Ronald (Allyn) Vodicka of Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren, Laura Wright (wife of Chase Rehrig) of Quincy, Andrew Wright of Columbia, Missouri, Graham Wright of Quincy and Margaret "Maggie" and Cameron "Cam" Vodicka of Seattle, Washington.
