Margaret E. 'Peggy' Durall, age 71, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the Mercy Lincoln Hospital in Troy, MO. She was born on September 2, 1950, in Pittsfield, IL to Carlos Johnson and Gwendolyn Davis Stilwell. She then married her soulmate, William Durall on September 4, 1971, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church and he survives.
Peggy grew up in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1968. She then went on to obtain an Associate Degree in Business from the Northeast Missouri State University. Peggy's first job after graduating was at the King Mill in Pittsfield as a bookkeeper. She then married William 'Bill' Durall, and they spent the next year in Galesburg where Peggy worked at the Metropolitan Insurance Co. After Galesburg, Peggy and Bill became the epitome of a military couple. She fully supported Bill and his career, fully engaged in serving as an Air Force spouse. Bill's career took them to many places including his first technical training tour in Monterey, California and then onto the Goodfellow Airforce Base in St. Angelo, Texas for a short stint. Peggy and Bill then went to West Berlin, Germany for 3 years and while there, Christina was born, and Peggy worked at the on base gift shop. After, they were transferred to Offutt Airforce Base in Omaha, Nebraska, where Brian was born. They went on to RAF Mildenhall, England where Peggy worked in a China Shop, and the next stop was back to Pittsfield where Peggy stayed while Bill went through officer training school. Then, they went to Keesler Air force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, then to Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota where she worked at the base thrift shop. Bill and Peggy were then transferred to Sembach Air Base in Germany where she served as the Catholic Religious Education Coordinator for the Sembach Chapel. Following their move back to Scott Air Force Base, Peggy again served as the base chapel Catholic Religious Education Coordinator. There she also went on to begin her work with Hallmark at Sarah's Hallmark store in O'Fallon, IL. From there, she continued to travel the world with Bill as he was stationed in other various places including Dover Air Force Base, Delaware; Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona; Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs; Kingston, Ontario, Canada; Osan Air Base in Korea; Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX; and Edwards Air Force Base in California where she would manage and work in their base thrift shops or other local stores. In 2007, Peggy returned to Pittsfield to help care for their parents, while Bill finished his military career at Scott Air Force Base. In addition, she worked at Casteel's as a bookkeeper for her lifelong family friend, Carolyn Casteel. During her 37-year tenure as a military spouse, she volunteered many hours to the church and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Peggy was also active with the Detroit Christian Church community. Peggy served as President of the Pittsfield Community Center Board where she donated many hours. She was also an HCE member and member of St. Mary's Choir as well as a volunteer for many church fundraisers. She enjoyed a variety of crafts over the years including ceramics, quilting, various types of needlework, and stained glass. Peggy was selfless, loyal, trusting, supportive, and steady. Through the chaos of all their moves, Peggy served as the foundation for the many successes her family enjoyed over the years, always helping them to be happy, healthy, and whole.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bill; one daughter, Christina (Richard) Miskho of Maple Valley, WA; one son, Brian Durall of Olivette, MO; and one grandson, David Zane Miskho, as well as several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnson and Gwen Stilwell and in-laws, Charles and Clara Durall.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church. So sorry to hear of Peggy's passing. Far too young but what an adventure you two had traveling the world! I'm quite sure we've "walked the same dirt" and entered many of the same establishments across the world but especially in Korea (having served as a Korean linguist for the Corps). I'm sure you're already aware but one of the few things I knew about Peggy was how much she was loved by your Mom and Dad (first and foremost) and next, my Mom and Dad and finally, by pretty much everyone else that ever met her. You know, when a name is spoken and it brings with it the light of genuine delight in a person's eyes; you know that person was truly special. That's what I remember about the name Peggy Durall. She was a gem and you are truly blessed to have had such an extraordinary person with whom you could spend your life! May God continue to Bless and comfort you, brother! Semper Fi! Dave Lehr
