Robert Sleight Obituary

GRIGGSVILLE, Ill. -- Robert D. Sleight, 77, of Griggsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at Liberty Village.

He was born Feb. 20, 1941, in Quincy, to Delbert and Rosalee Kennedy Sleight. He married Jean Roberts on July 30, 1977, in Griggsville, and she survives.

Bob was a graduate of Griggsville High School and Western Illinois University, where he was a founding member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. His work life was spent in the field of agriculture, first as a farmer and then in ag sales and service.

In 1985, together with his wife and sons, Bob started the Brothers Corn Dogs concession business. He loved cooking corn dogs and meeting and greeting all of the people he saw along the way. He took great pleasure in the fact that the corndog business continues to this day with the third generation of his family involved. Bob was a member of Griggsville United Methodist Church and Pittsfield Lions Club. He also was a past member of the Western Illinois Fair Board and Griggsville Apple Festival Committee. Bob enjoyed deer hunting (and deer hunting storytelling!) with Michael, Kiki and Maddie, Chuck, Keith and Kolbe, Shane Rick and Jason and Jake. He liked going fishing, and following Griggsville-Perry and Fighting Illini sports. Bob was always outside gardening, growing beautiful flowers, mowing all the time, swimming and going for golf cart rides with "the girls." He also enjoyed eating out with Jean and being wherever the kids and grandkids were.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, David (Carol) Sleight of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael (Lorrie) Sleight of Athens, Ill., and Karen (Shaun) Maulding of Plainfield; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Mo) Williams, Caroline Sleight, Max Sleight, Kennedy Sleight, Madison Sleight, Zachary Maulding and Kaleb Maulding; a great-granddaughter, Penelope Williams; a mother-in-law, Genieve Roberts; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bruce Zumwalt; nieces and nephews, Jeff and Cathy Wilson, Jason and Shelley Wilson, and Kendall and Ginger Canfield; great-nieces and great-nephews, Cyle and Tiffany Reel, Courtney Reel, Kyle Wilson, Drew Wilson, Abby Canfield and Sydney Canfield; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Jerry Wilson; a brother, Ronald, in infancy; and a father-in-law, Max Roberts.
