Shirley Rose Allen, age 88, of Quincy, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 9:35 a.m. in Blessing Hospital.
Shirley was born July 19,1935 in Macon County, Missouri, the daughter of Floyd and Ava Keel Suits. She married Gerald D. "Cubby" Allen on June 1, 1956, in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 19, 2004.
Shirley was a graduate of Shelbina High School. She attended Gem City Business College. She was employed for two years at Mitchel Air Force base in Hempstead, New York. Shirley spent 10 years at Quincy College working with Joe Bonansinga before transferring to the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center, where she was employed for 14 years.
Shirley's hobbies include watching the Today Show, Cardinal's Baseball, and playing Ponytail Canasta. She was an avid reader, enjoyed caring for the Eber rose garden. Most important to Shirley was her Wednesday breakfast at Hardees with her sons and Saturday lunches with her family.
Survivors include her son, Dr. David (Dottie) Allen of Quincy; four grandchildren: Lexi, Curtis, Colby and Daxton Allen; two step-grandchildren: Karlee and Josh Dreyer; one great-grandchild, Zaiven Dean; one step-great-grandchild, Mylee Wittmer; a sister-in-law, Vera Allen of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Janine Allen; a son, Dr. Douglas Allen; an infant son, Jeffrey Allen; a nephew, Terry Allen; and a niece, Amalie Eaton.
Visitation: 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Good Samaritan Home Wee Kirk Chapel.
Services: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Good Samaritan Home Wee Kirk Chapel with Chaplain Josh Vahle officiating.
Burial: Quincy Memorial Park, Quincy, Illinois
Memorials: Madison Park Christian Church, Good Samaritan Home, or the American Heart Association
Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
