Fred Vaughan Legg, III, known to his friends and family as Vaughan, passed away on Dec. 8, 2024 following a brief illness, at the age of 67, in Cleveland. Vaughan was a man of unwavering dependability, known for his kindness, humor, and dedication to those around him. Whether in his military service, career as a nurse, or in his personal relationships, Vaughan was someone you could always count on.
Vaughan's journey began in Gainesville, where he graduated at the top of his class from Lakeview Academy, in a unique and impressive achievement as the only senior for that year. He went on to graduate from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, with a degree in business, before embarking on a distinguished career in the U.S. Army as an Army Ranger.
Vaughan was selected out of many to attend the highly competitive Army Ranger school. After completing and graduating from Army Ranger school, Vaughan soon became a Company Commander for Company D, 1st Battalion 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, Ft. Hood, Texas where he was selected cadre personnel for combat training of over 250 soldiers. Also, Vaughan was a Rifle Platoon Leader for Company A, 2d Battalion (Ranger), 75th Infantry, Ft. Lewis, Washington, amongst other duties that included Assistant Intelligence Office for an Airborne Ranger Infantry.
His commitment to service was a hallmark of his character, and he carried that sense of duty into every aspect of his life. After his military service, Vaughan returned to Gainesville, where he earned his nursing degree from Brenau University (BSN). He worked for over two decades as a nurse and began his career at Lanier Park Hospital in the critical care unit and then to the Emergency Department before working for Northeast Georgia Medical Center Emergency Department. He continued his education and service to the community by becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner and worked at a local clinic in Cleveland.
Vaughan had a wide range of interests outside of his professional life. He was athletic and enjoyed martial arts, weightlifting, and hunting. His love of physical pursuits was matched only by his sense of humor. Vaughan's sharp wit and playful spirit made him a beloved figure in every gathering, and he was once famously banned from guessing Christmas presents after correctly identifying every gift one year.
Vaughan was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Vaughan Legg, who was the most important person in his life. He was also preceded by his mother, Barbara Jane Quinlan, his father, Fred Vaughan Legg, II, his step-father, Clarence Ernest Lee, Jr., his brother, Leslie Wayne Legg, and his nephew, Leslie Wayne Legg, Jr., and his beloved German shepherd, Bear.
He is survived by his sisters, Sylvia Workman (Thomas) of The Woodlands, Texas, Patricia Jane Baynham (Timothy) of Austin, Texas; and his brother, James Lee of Monroe. Vaughan also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Karen Legg, and great-nephew, Lucas Legg of Oakwood; as well as nieces, Brooke Workman Ramon of Schulenburg, Texas, and Avery Lee of Monroe; along with many cousins, close friends from Lanier Park, and colleagues who will deeply miss him.
A memorial service to honor Vaughan's life will take place on Dec. 28, 2024 at 11a.m. at The Cleveland Worship Center, Cleveland. Visitation will be at Barrett Funeral Home on December 27, 2024 from 4 p.m. to 6.p.m. and on December 28, 2024 from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to
