Melvin Cocking Obituary

Melvin 'Mike' Cocking
Born: November 18, 1937
Died: January 24, 2025
Melvin "Mike" Cocking, 88, of Erie, Illinois, passed away on January 24, 2025, in Kansas, near his oldest daughter. Mike was born on November 18, 1937, to Gail and Gladys (Neally) Cocking. He graduated from Erie High School in 1955 and later served in the United States Army Reserves, where he spent eight years before receiving an honorary discharge.
In 1955, Mike married Connie Wall, and together they raised four daughters. At the age of 18, Mike began his career as a plaster contractor. He honed his craft with creativity and artistry, becoming known across the Quad Cities for his unique work. Mike worked for Builder Sales and Service before starting his own business, Mike Cocking Plastering.
Mike and Connie also owned and operated The Other Place in Erie for 17 years. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Maryville, Tennessee, where they enjoyed life on Tellico Lake. They spent their time boating, fishing, golfing, and exploring the Smoky Mountains, often hosting family and friends. Later, Mike and Connie wintered in Englewood, Florida, where they spent their last years.
A 32nd-degree Mason, Mike was an active member of the Erie Masonic Lodge. He was also a charter member of the Lake Erie Country Club and an avid golfer. Mike's love for the game was evident, and he was thrilled to achieve his first hole-in-one at the age of 80, followed by his second at 82-both witnessed by his lifelong best friend, RK Thorpe.
Mike had a gift for storytelling, captivating listeners with vivid details and dates. He and Connie shared a passion for dancing, often clearing the floor to jitterbug and waltz to the music of big bands. It was common to see them dancing in their living room, much to the delight of their daughters.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Connie Cocking; four daughters, Beth (Roger) Jenkins of Overland Park, Kansas, Gayle Raab of Erie, Sondra (George) Braden of Sherrard, and Shelly Hoefling of Pittsburg, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gail and Gladys Cocking, and his sister, Janice Kelly.
Mike's legacy of hard work, helping others, and loyalty to his friends will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
As per their wishes, their interment will be at Erie Cemetery.
