Robert McKenna Obituary

McKENNA, ROBERT JAMES III of Seekonk, MA passed from this life on December 9, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Jewitt City, CT on Christmas Eve 1950, he was the son of the late Robert Jr. and Rosemarie McKenna, Reborn on August 29, 1981, the day he married his "young lady", the love of his life, Karen (Mahoney) McKenna. He was the devoted father of Tim and Katie McKenna and her fiancee Danny Sousa, and the best buddy of "Duke". He is survived by his sisters Carleen Banas, Ellen Bell, Judy Breen and by his brothers Michael McKenna and Adam Murphy. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service for 27 years. Known by many as the "Unofficial Mayor of Seekonk", he gave back to his community by serving as President of the Seekonk Athletics Booster Club, member of the Conservation Committee, Veterans Committee, Meadows Park Committee, and the Seekonk High School & Martin School Building Committees. He also gave his time generously as both a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, a Little League Coach, part of the "Big Brothers" program for over 30 years, and was an avid supporter of the Rhode Island Blood Center, donating regularly. In addition to serving his community and enriching the lives of those he loved, his hobbies included rooting for the Patriots and Red Sox (until recently), chasing pigs, and talking, endlessly, to anyone who would listen...even Republicans. His passions included spending time with his family and friends, fishing, telling and retelling stories, and complaining about politics. He was a uniquely special man who will be missed by all who knew him. He selflessly donated his body to the Brown University Medical Research Center. On Wednesday, December 12, 2012, a Memorial Mass will be held at 11am at St. Dominic's Church 1277 G.A.R Highway, Swansea, MA, and the family will receive friends from 4-8pm at Seekonk High School, 261 Arcade Ave., Seekonk, MA 02771. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Seekonk Athletics Booster Club, same address.

Dear Karen, Tim, Dan and Katie (and grandkids). None of us know for certain if there is some level of awareness (cellular perhaps?) state experienced by our loved ones when they leave this life. If there is, you can all be certain that Bob is as proud of you all as he always was.

Thanks for keeping up his legacy with the Blood Center. Unfortunately, I will be in Florida this year but every donation I do make, I do it in his memory.

Love you

Still missing you, Bob. Whenever I drive by the water on 152 I think of you at sunset, sunrise and anytime in between with your fishing rod and weather-worn ball cap and, of course, an anecdote to share.

Bob,
It is hard to believe that you have passed away but your obituary makes it obvious that you wanted to be remembered just as the person I remember working with for several years...a hard-working, well-loved, fun-loving guy. I will miss those Valentine's Day cards that you were infamous for, I will miss those Eric Cartman quote- "Respect My Authority," those not-so-nice fat comments that I would yell at you for, your stories about your beloved family and the infamous Duke. I truly hope that you are up in Heaven looking down at us, still laughing, still flattering old ladies, still pushing sweets on others, still buying elementary school valentines for your friends, still being the good time I remember you to be. Hope to see you again one day...

Karen, Katie and Tim, We are so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. When we heard the news we were devestated. Although, we havent been in contact as neighbors in years. the loss is still significant. Jerry and I will never forget how Bob would just stop by to say hello" or take care of Jordan and Ali after my accident in 1999. I will never forget that as long as I live. And his constant positive attitude with a twist of humour will always be remembered. Love, The Gosetti's

As most people's lives may be described as a series of events, more often planned or mundane, Bob's was not the case. His could more adequately be described as a series of escapades, and those of us who were fortunate enough to share them with him had no idea of the adventures on which we were about to embark. His love of life reflected in his love for Karen and his family, his lightning fast wit, endless humor, and penchant for mischief will most likely never be equaled. You have given laughter, memories, and comfort, and I for one, will miss you, and will always feel blessed to have called you my friend.

I have known this man for over 25 years. I would play with his niece and nephew when they visited their grandmother around the corner from my house in Seekonk. Bob would visit all the time. He was also one of the coaches on my baseball team the year we won the championship. He visited me in the hospital when I was injured from being hit by a car. Always being cheerful and funny. Whether it was throwing snowballs at us or helping us out of jams Bob would be there if you needed him. Parents and kids loved him. Was truly a decent, honest man. He will be missed dearly. Thank you Bob for everything.

Bob Mckenna was one of the best mailmen around. He used to pick flowers from yards and pass them around. He delivered to us for years. He was one of the nicest and funniest guys I ever met. Then 2 years ago I had the pleasure of becoming his neighbor in Seekonk. He continued with his teasing and humor. He will be missed. Mrs. McKenna, Katie and Tim I am truly sorry for your loss.

Bob was one who lived fully and authentically. It is often said that so and so lived fully but in Bob's case it is so true.

He was a dear friend who has taught me much about appreciating the important things in life. I never met another person who appreciated his blessings (family, friends) so enthusiastically.

He will be missed greatly by many.

It was an honor to know you and considered to be family by you!! I remember when I first met you and Adam introduced you as his brother, I just thought you had different fathers. It wasn't until after that Adam clarified the "big brother" part. But to him you were his brother, his father, a mentor, and one of the best friends he had. I thank you for all that you did for him to make him the special person he is today, and for us as a family now. You will be greatly missed by all who had the priveledge of meeting you, even though you would probably say that the priveledge was yours. And that just sums it up right there! The Murphy Family loves you, Bob and we will hold your memory in our hearts forever!!

Bob was our mailman for many years. My mom was elderly and home much of the time and the two of them had a lovely little friendship. He would ring the bell to hand her the mail, and she would feed him watermelon slices on hot days. When she passed two years ago, he was there in line to pay his respects. I am so sad to say goodbye to this truly special man who made the world a little better place.

My deepest condolences on Bob's passing. He was a great man, who will be missed by all. I can remember as a kid he was the coolest mailman going. Snowball fights with my brother and I off Newport Ave., in the Darlington area of Pawtucket. My thoughs and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will be fondly remembered

Mrs. McKenna, Katie & Tim,

Mr. McKenna was a one of a kind. No one can compare to him. I will always remember his warm smile and funny stories (even if he told them over and over again). My heart goes out to you during your time of sorrow. Your family will be in thoughts and prayers.

Bob defined the word Friend to me. He set a standard that guides me on politics, fishing, and compassion for people, sense of humor, honor, loyal friendship and most of all, being a devoted Family Man. I am sure he's with God and they are both out chasing False Albacore casting clousers. No doubt that Bob is providing the Almighty with tips on his backcast too. Bob ~ what can I say ~ I WILL miss you every day. ~ Gary
