Walter Weinfurt Obituary

Walter M. Weinfurt, 77, of Bedford died on January 2, 2021, following a brief illness. He was born in Southampton, NY, on August 9, 1943, and was the son of the late Frederick M. and Ethel (Loader) Weinfurt. He was raised in Southampton and graduated from Mercy High School in 1962. After high school, he entered the U.S. Air Force and proudly served during the Vietnam Era from 1965 until 1968. He was stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines for more than a year and eventually was released from active duty through Pease Air Force in New Hampshire. While at Pease, he met his wife, Joyce A. Smith, and they were married in 1968 and made Bedford their home in 1972. Walter continued his education at Bentley University in Waltham where he received his bachelors degree in business in 1977. After leaving the Air Force, he began working at Raytheon as a financial analyst. He retired in 2009 as director of contracts after 42 years with the company. He was a devout member of St. Michael Parish where over the years he served as a lector, eucharistic minister, a religious education instructor and was a member of the finance committee. Walter was an avid sports fan, supporting all the local Boston sports teams and the Notre Dame fighting Irish. When his children were young, Walter coached baseball in the Bedford Babe Ruth baseball league. In retirement, Walter enjoyed traveling with his wife to Florida in the winter. He also volunteered at the Friends of Bedford Depot Park where he served as their treasurer up until his passing. He enjoyed spending time with his 5 grandchildren. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife, of 49 years, Joyce A. (Smith) Weinfurt, in 2018. He is survived by his children, Joan Aucoin of Billerica, David Weinfurt and his wife Marie of Union Vale, NY, Patricia Bowman and her husband Greg of Mount Airy, MD and Jeffrey Weinfurt and his wife Stephanie of Bolton, dear brother of Frederick J. Weinfurt of Southampton, NY and grandchildren Cameron, Joseph, Danielle, Matthew and John. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Jimmy Fund, P.O. Box 849168 Boston, MA 02284 or to the Friends of Bedford Depot Park, 120 South Rd., Bedford, MA 01730. Arrangements are in the care of the Bedford Funeral Home.

Dear Joan, David, Patricia and Jeffrey, I am so very sorry to hear about your father's passing. Today, while visiting my husband, Keith, at the cemetery, I noticed something had occurred at your family gravesite. I saw your father every day, tending to your mother's grave with such loving devotion. She was the 'Love of his life' and he missed her terribly. He and your mother are, at last, together for all eternity. May they rest in peace. Love always, Jean, Lisa and Keith Colbath
