Leonard Werst Obituary

Leonard (Len) Werst passed away July 3, 2013 at the family cottage in Sellersville, Pennsylvania surrounded by Dorothy, his loving wife of 63 years, and his family. He was born and raised in Perkasie, PA. Len graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Moore School of Engineering and was elected to the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society. After graduation he was employed by the Philco Corporation in Philadelphia where he worked on the LEM (Lunar Excursion Module) project, part of the Apollo Moon Program. Len also served in the United States Army 3181st Signal Service Battalion. In 1962 he and his family moved to Acton, Massachusetts to be near his work at RCA in Burlington. The family became Charter Members of St. Matthews United Methodist Church that was just being started. He served as Financial Secretary, member of the board of Trustees and member of the Finance Committee. Len loved to sing and was a member of the Chancel Choir for over 40 years. He was an avid reader, loved to travel and tend his garden. Len and his wife co-founded Boston Share Network in 2004 which is a non-profit organization that works with volunteers, shelters and agencies to assess the needs of the homeless and poor, responds to those needs and bridges the gap between homelessness and a life of hope. It gave him great joy knowing he was helping those in need. Len and his wife, Dorothy Zink Werst have three sons; Tom and his wife, Sue, of Merrimack, NH, Steve and his wife, Kathy, of Acton, MA and Kent and his wife, Jane, of Arlington, MA. They also have 5 wonderful grandchildren; Sallie, Ben, Jordan, Nate and Jack. Len is also survived by three brothers, a sister and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Thurs. July 11th from 6-9pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. The funeral service will be held Fri. Dear Dot and Boys, Judy and I were saddened to read of Len's passing. He will always be remembered by us and countless others as one who used his smile nuscles a lot more than his frown muscles.More importantly, his thoughtfullness and willingness to help others, will hold him in the highest esteem with our creator. We are so glad that we were able to attend the STMUMC 50th anniversary last Oct, where we able to spend a few minutes with Len. Yes, he will be deeply and forever missed; however, the four of you have memories that one would hope and pray will sustain you in this incomprehensible time of loss. With warmest personal regards, we will keep you in our prayers, Ken and Judy Roberts, Mesa, AZ....
