George Peterson Obituary

George W. Peterson, 96, of North Eastham, formerly of Franklin Lakes, NJ, died Saturday evening, February 23, 2013, at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home, Route 39, Brewster, MA. Born in Campgaw, NJ, he was the only child and son of the late George J. and May (Terwilleger) Peterson. A graduate of Ramsey High School, he was employed as a welder at the General Motors Assembly Plant in Linden, NJ before returning to work at the family farm, on Summit Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, where he operated a large greenhouse business, raising nursery plants and flowers, and selling them to the general public until the death of his Father in 1966. A talented craftsman, George built and operated, Petersons Cottages, a small cottage colony on Route 6, South Wellfleet, MA. After his Fathers death, his Mother joined him, and assisted him in the business for many years. After retirement George and his Mother moved to North Eastham, where he built his own home, and where he lived until his death. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, shell fishing and catching lobsters from his boat Fun Seeker which he kept in Wellfleet Harbor. He was a lifetime member of The Nauset Rod & Gun Club, Inc; where he volunteered his time, running the skeet and trap fields, and firing ranges. He was also a former member of the candlepin bowling league in Orleans. Georges favorite pastime, and first love, was growing all of his flower and vegetable plants from seed, planting his garden, and harvesting all of his fresh fruits and vegetables for freezing and table use. He was predeceased by his long time friend and companion, Jean L. Cotton, and leaves many long time friends, and distant relatives, who will sadly miss him. Visiting hours will be held from 3p | 7p on Thursday February 28, 2013 at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A graveside service and burial will take place on Monday, March 4th at 1pm at the Wyckoff Reformed Church Cemetery, Wyckoff, NJ.

I have many happy memories of George at the Cape. He had a kind gentle soul and will be missed.

I spent every summer of my childhood at the Cape in S. Wellfleet with my grandparents Charles and Clara Cotton.
George was a dear friend of theirs and my aunt Jean Cotton and we saw him every day. I cherish those memories of clamming, fishing, and his love for the
Cape and nature and spending quality time with my family.
