John Halvorson Obituary

John Hull Halvorson, 78, died Wednesday, May 13, 2020 from complications of Alzheimers. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Hawthorne Parker and Gladys Kenrick Halvorson; his first wife, Linda Moses Halvorson; and his sister, Alicia Gutierrez Raymond. He is survived by his wife, Terry Daniels Halvorson, and his four daughters and their families: Kristin Lara Halvorson of Paris, France; Paige Woodsum Rand and her husband Nathaniel Rand of Hingham, MA; Zoe Jaye Halvorson of Woodstock, VT; and Josephine Norton Halvorson and her husband Peter Buckley of New Marlborough, MA. He is also survived by one nephew, Geoffrey Clark, and by six grandchildren: Owen, Mia, Ava, Emmett, Lucien, and Caroline. John was born at Boston City Hospital in 1942 and attended Wellesley High School, graduating in 1959. He studied philosophy, geology, religion, and art at Wesleyan University and Boston University where he earned his BA in 1966. Working at his fathers Texaco station off Route 9, John gained an appreciation of chemistry, craft, and mechanics, which led him to work with metal throughout his professional life. He had careers as an artist, teacher, and custom metal worker. Johns kinetic sculptures were exhibited throughout Cape Cod in the 1970s. He taught art and ran the shops at Sandwich High School from 1970 to 1981. John married Terry in 1980 and settled in Brewster, where they co-founded Rose Forge, Inc. For over four decades, they have run a blacksmith forge and metal shop where they have fabricated custom architectural, artistic, and practical pieces. Their business evolved over time and incorporated alternative heating products, which they installed in thousands of homes throughout the Cape and Islands. Through their business, they mentored a number of very special young people. For over thirty years, John served the public as a member and chair of the Brewster Historic District Commission. In 2006, he retired from Rose Forge and dedicated the rest of his life to Alcoholics Anonymous, becoming a Master Gardener, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He was passionate about music, ice cream, hiking in the White Mountains, and loved taking 'a quick dip in the bay'. A celebration of Johns life will be announced at a later date.
