Peter Winslow Obituary

Peter Nathaniel Winslow, 68, of Orleans died March 9, 2012 following a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Boston he was raised in Orleans, the eldest son of the late Everett Carpenter and Frances Harriet Freya" (Midelfart) Winslow. Peter graduated from Yale University with a degree in biology. He later attended graduate school at Rutgers University. Entering the teaching profession he taught middle and high school science in Plainfield, New Jersey and Barnstable, Massachusetts. Shifting occupations, Peter followed in the footsteps of his father, beginning a fifteen-year career in the building business. Later he established Winslow Fine Arts and until the time of his death he was actively involved in the buying and selling of old or rare books and records, art and antiques. Possessing a keen mind and quick wit he loved nothing more than a lively philosophical debate covering myriad topics from sports to science and art. Peter is survived by his brother Sigurd Winslow and sister-in-law Judy Scanlon of Orleans who lovingly shared their home with him during his illness. He is also survived by his brother Eric Winslow and sister-in-law Nancy of Wellfleet, sister-in-law Betsy Winslow of Orleans, nephews Patrick and Sam, both of Wellfleet, Uli of Orleans, a niece Lia of Virginia, as well as two grand-nieces, Addie and Koli of Wellfleet. Peter also leaves his dear friend and former wife, Barbara Haines. He was predeceased by two sisters, Julie and Sarah. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28th, 11:00 am at The Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main Street. As a friend of Bill W., donations in Peters memory may be made to Gosnold on Cape Cod, 200 Ter Heun Drive, Falmouth, MA 02540 or VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 434 Rt. 134, Suite D3, South Dennis, MA 02660.
