Thomas Nickerson Obituary

Thomas Brewer Nickerson, of Orleans, Massachusetts, died Saturday, December 12th in his winter home in Punta Gorda, Florida, at the age of 87. Nickerson was the beloved husband of Carol Nickerson and father of Bethany Nickerson and Thomas Brewer Nickerson, Jr. Originally from Eastham, he was the son of Otto Eli Nickerson and Albina Brewer Nickerson. He attended his fathers one room schoolhouse through grade 8 and graduated from Orleans High School in 1951. At Northeastern University he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Sigma (AKS) fraternity, joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. After graduation from Northeastern University in 1956, Mr. Nickerson went on active duty with the Army Signal Corps and was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and the Decatur Signal Depot in Illinois. Completing active duty in 1958, he was assigned to the 441st Civil Affairs Company army reserve unit in Massachusetts. He continued serving in the Army Reserves for 28 years. In the 1980s he was promoted to Colonel and assigned to the Army Material Command in Alexandria, VA, retiring in 1986. After working for Revere Copper and Brass in New Bedford in the late 1950s, he began a career in banking that brought him back to Cape Cod. In 1960 he became branch manager of the First National Bank of Cape Cod in Wellfleet, remaining there two years until moving to the Hyannis Cooperative Bank in Orleans, where he worked into the 1970s serving first as branch manager and then as vice president. He later started a mortgage company, Cape Cod Mortgage, and was executive vice president of Business Locators of Cape Cod. In 1989 he moved to Key West, Florida, where he was director of security at the Truman Annex. Since the early 2000s he enjoyed spending his winters in Florida and summers on the Cape. He could often be found out in the brambles and briars of the cranberry bog behind his Brewster home by day, and enjoying the local Cape music scene at night. Tom Nickerson was an avid reader, loved cars, listening to music, getting together with friends and family, and spending time with his grandchildren and their significant others. A fond memory of his was working at the Tydol station in Orleans when he had a Model A Ford, which had been his cousin Ken Collins car and was given to him by his Uncle Cubby after Ken went to college. He also often shared stories from his experiences as a copy boy at the Boston Globe, a job he loved and had for two years as part of the cooperative program at Northeastern. He was active in many civic organizations over the course of his life, including the Orleans Rotary Club, the Reserve Officers Association of Southeastern Massachusetts, the AKS Board of Trustees where he served as president and was trustee emeritus, and the Church of the Holy Spirit where he served as treasurer for many years. Mr. Nickerson was a deputy sheriff. He was also active in politics and served two terms on the Orleans Board of Selectmen. Mr. Nickerson was predeceased by his parents, Otto and Albina, his sister Jocelyn Maza and his nephew David Maza. Survivors include his wife Carol Nickerson of South Orleans and Punta Gorda, Florida; his daughter Bethany Ann Nickerson and son in-law John Wagner of Washington, D.C.; his son Thomas Brewer Nickerson, Jr., and daughter in-law Jody Nickerson of Deerfield, Wisconsin; his stepsons, Paul Bennett of Sun City Center, Florida and Stephen Bennett of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania; his niece Mary Maza Zappulla of North Fort Myers, Florida; his former wife Patricia Nickerson Flor of Tamarac, Florida; his grandchildren Anabel Grace Nickerson, Cole Thomas Nickerson, Arden Rose Nickerson, Calvin Nickerson Wagner and Nathan Nickerson Wagner; many cousins and friends; and his beloved dog Carmelita, who was always at his side. A burial memorial service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Eastham in late spring. Memorial donations may be sent to the Schoolhouse Museum at P.O. Box 8, Eastham, MA 02642-0008

I do remember Tom and if my Jerry was still with us he would have many special words to say about Col Nickerson. I was the Reserve Liaison Officer at JIATF East (and through all other iterations of that commands name) in Key West Florida. My memory is not as good as it once was but I do remember Tom being there with all of us when we had our Friday "get together" with our Air Force Reservists and with other JIATF personnel that the AF worked with. They were great fun and we all got to know more about each other during these times. Good or bad (though I do not remember any bad!). Tom was a very nice and kind person and was always ready to help us out. I am truly glad Jerry and I knew him.

Saddened to hear of Tom’s passing. I met Tom in the mid 1990’s in Key West while in the USAFR and will always remember his friendliness and good humor. My deepest condolences to his family. I know he will be missed.

I met Tom during military duty in South Florida. He was a kind and gentle man who inspired a lot of us more junior officers. He was a good mentor and a leader who made things happen. He will be missed! Rest In Peace my friend.

I’m saddened of Tom’s passing. He was my friend for about 25 years. We met in Key West Florida around 1994. Always friendly and joked around. He had a laugh that was contagious. He never lost his New England accent and I’d make fun of it since I was born and raised in Canada and really had no accent. He was a wonderful man, a good friend and a patriot. He will be missed. RIP my military brother.

Colonel Thomas Nickerson was an American patriot, with a rich family history in Cape Cod, and his passing was a loss to everyone who really knew him. Tom was an incredible true friend to me for over twenty years -- we met in Key West, while I was on USAFR duty. On numerous occasions (my doctoral studies, my promotion to colonel, and my civilian career in DOD), Tom mentored me, and gave me advice that were priceless. In addition, in our many, many conversations, Tom always shared his love for his children, his family, and his wife, Carol. We spoke fairly often, and his love and concern for America was clearly evident. I had the honor to visit Tom in Cape Cod for lunch years ago, and he showed me the places where he lived and grew up. In addition, and a first for me, I saw how cranberries were grown ... Tom, proudly showed me his behind his house! For me personally, Tom was an exceptional individual I interacted with in my life. I will remember him always as a friend. Colonel Thomas Nickerson, in the true tradition of his ancestors who came to America and landed in Cape Cod, worked hard, served his country with distinction, and as such, was an American patriot! I will miss him, and I also know he will be missed by countless others, especially, his children, and his loving wife, Carol. God bless Tom.

Tom was a long-term friend and colleague. I believe I met Tom around October 1992. Tom being retired Army, and we were just moving our Air Force Reserve Intelligence Detachment from Homestead Air Force Base, which was essentially destroyed by Hurricane Andrew, down to JIATF-East on Truman Annex on Key West. With Tom's Army rank and skill, and his civilian position as being in charge of Civilian Security on Truman Annex, Tom did many favors to our AF Detachment. For one example, when we had visiting AF VIPs to our Detachment, Tom marked off parking for our cars right on a Truman Annex street, right across the City street from Kelly McGillis' Restaurant.
Tom was a host to Fran, my wife, and me, many years on the Cape. Tom toured us from his small school, to many ball games in the Cape League.
Tom did have a Cranberry Bog behind his house. He had cleaned the bog enough that there were enough Cranberrys that I picked enough berries that I sent via FedEx to Beth and Tommy so they could mix with commercial berries and have Daddy's berries for Thanksgiving.
God Bless Tom. A friend always.

Tom was such a wonderful gentleman...the Southernmost gentleman. Jane and I got to know Tom almost thirty years ago in Key West. While in the Air Force Reserve, we had so many good times with Tom and Shaun Barrett and others in Key West. We will always remember Tom’s smile and cheerful accent. (My wife Jane’s family was also from Massachusetts and had a place on Cape Cod, too.). I salute you Colonel Nickerson.

I worked for Tom when he was branch manager at Hyannis Co-operative Bank in Orleans. He was a great boss and very kind to his help. I deeply respected him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family

I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Tom when I visited a friend on military duty in Key West in the 1990's. Saw him for the last time about 3 years ago when we had lunch with Tom and Carol on the river in Bradenton, FL. He was such a friendly, thoughtful person. I know he is missed by many and especially by his family.

So very very saddened to learn of Tom's passing. He and I have been frieds for more than 25 years and fellow warriors for almost three decades. I was one of a number of USAFR members who became friends of Tom when we headed to JTF-4 and its successors starting in the early 1990s. After our Air Force members retired, like Tom, we stayed in touch over the years and saw each other once or twice a year. We will miss him. Rest in peace my friend.
