Robert Ferrera Obituary

FERRERA, ROBERT, 95, was born 5-10-1918 and passed away on 12-5-2013. A WWII veteran, entered service on March 4, 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts. Received his basic training in Camp Edwards, Mass. Left USA on January 23, 1942 from Brooklyn, NY Naval Yard six weeks after USA entered WWII against Germany and Japan. Served in Combat in Guadalcanal, N. Solomon's, Bougainville, Southern Philippines and was in the invasion of Cebu Island of the Philippines, the last island invaded in February 1945. He received good conduct medal 60 H7 Hg121 Med BN 44 Presidential Unit Citation 6067 Hq Americal 1943. Awarded the American Defense Service Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon. Citation on the mayor of the President of the United States, First Marine Division Reinforced, February 4, 1943 signed by Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox. Presidential Unit Citation December 31, 1943. Returned to USA on August 14, 1945, to Seattle Washington on VJ Day (Victory over Japan) was discharged from the U.S. Armed forces at Ft. Devens, Mass on August 28, 1945. Served overseas from January 23, 1942 to August 14, 1945 a total of three years, six months, and twenty-two days. WWII only lasted 3 years and eight months. Wife, Flor, and daughter, Maria Francis, preceded Mr. Ferrera in death. He is survived by son, Robert Arthur Ferrera Jr; grandchildren Eric and Jamie Atala, Karina Atala, Gianna Francis, and Robert Andrew Ferrera; and great-granddaughter Emma Atala. Services will be held at Van Orsdel Kendall Chapel on Sunday, 12-8-13 from 6 - 9 pm with graveside services on Monday, 12-9-13 at 9:30am at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery.

He was a great and kind man. I will never forget all the kind acts during my childhood including Dolphins games, Univ of Miami games at the Orange Bowl. He would always be positive "they're gonna win today". Back then, both teams were horrible. He took the time to be nice to my brothers and I. The world is a little worse off, now that he is not here. Take care Bob, you are missed!
