Lucretia Romey Obituary

Lucretia Leonard Romey died peacefully on December 2, 2012 in Orleans due to complications from Alzheimers Disease. Born in Akron, Ohio to George and June Leonard, she lived there until her grad-uation from Indiana University with an AB in Fine Arts in 1955. She subsequently married William D. Romey, professor emeritus at St. Lawrence University, a marriage that lasted 57 years. The Romeys had an exciting and adventurous life, traveling the world for work and for play. Lucretia was a talented artist specializing in painting, drawing and creating award-winning art quilts and was a published author. While raising three children, exploring Norway, France, the United States and the far reaches of the world she always had sketch book in hand. Following her husband Bill to England; Washington, DC; Berkeley, CA; Syracuse, NY; Norway; Boulder, CO; Canton, NY; Paris and Rouen, France; and finally East Orleans, MA on Cape Cod she always relished the changes and imbued in all she knew a love of exploration and appreciation for all the joys of life. While her husband lectured on expedition cruise ships from 1991 to 2006 she made quilted wall hangings and painted watercolors of the Antarctic, Arctic, and mid-Atlantic and Caribbean islands, as well as of South America, Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands. When her husband became a fellow of the Explorers Club in New York she gamely sampled tarantula and scorpion at their meetings. In addition to her husband, Lucretia leaves her daughters Catherine Keener, an actress and model of Cape Cod, New York City, and Naples, FL, Gretchen Romey-Tanzer, a fiber artist and head of the art department at Cape Cod Academy, son William L. Romey, Professor of Biology at Potsdam State University, seven grandchildren, sister Polly Keener of Akron, OH, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be greatly missed by all. Gretchen, my love and sympathy to you and your family. My collected art work of your mother will remain one of my life's treasures. It was an honor to know Lucretia and to be blessed by her talent. I will continue to think of her daily as I look at the pastel she did of me in the 7th grade in my bedroom.. A lovely, gracious, and talented mother. Love, Nancy
