Paul Bosley Obituary
Feb. 8, 1932-Sept. 8, 2014 Paul Shailer Bosley passed away peacefully on Sept. 8, 2014. A long-term resident of South Orleans, Mass., Paul spent his last three years in New Mexico with his wife and daughter and had just moved back to the Cape in June. He joins his beloved wife, Mary, who died March 20, and also was predeceased by his parents, the Rev. Dr. Harold A. and Margaret Dahlstrom Bosley, and by a beloved brother, Sidney Stanton Bosley. Bosley was born in Chicago, Feb. 8. 1932. He was graduated from Durham (N.C.) High School in 1950 and received his bachelor-of-arts degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1954. In 1957, he earned a bachelor-of-divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary, New York City, and after a year of language study in Europe, he enrolled in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, where he earned a Ph.D. degree in the philosophy of religion in 1965. He joined the American civil-rights movement with other theological students and participated in the demonstrations in Albany, Ga., in 1962. He also served as president of National Methodist Youth. Bosley taught philosophy at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, for a time and left after receiving a grant from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to introduce a philosophy curriculum into selected high schools. He taught in the program and later was chosen to lead it. He was a member of the American Philosophical Association. Always a scholar, he returned to graduate school in his late 40s, this time earning a doctorate in psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, Newton, in 1985. He worked as a family therapist at the Barnstable Center on Cape Cod for many years before his retirement. Bosley met his abiding love and companion, Mary Mortimer Bosley, in 1956, when they both attended Union Seminary. They were married in June 1957. They moved often, following his interests in schooling, but eventually built a home and settled on the Namequoit River in South Orleans. There, they spent long summers on the waters of Cape Cod and cherished their family and friends. Bosley had two major passions-fishing and baseball. Growing up, he was an avid baseball player and became a pitcher in college as well as serving a short stint with a minor-league team in Iowa. As a boy, he started fishing with his father off the coast of New Jersey and later brought that love to the Cape Cod waters, with the pursuit of striped bass, bluefish, and blue-fin tuna. Bosley will be remembered as a very loving man who was playful and always young at heart. A Memorial Service will be held at The United Methodist Church in Orleans Center on October 18th at 3:00. A potluck celebration of his life will also be held that day from 6 p.m. to closing at the Odd Fellows Hall, Orleans, Mass. Surviving him are his three children-Stephen J. Bosley (Trish Kenney) of Earlysville, Va.; Michael S. Bosley (Karen Kenefick) of South Orleans; Anny Bosley Ruge (Chris) of Las Vegas, N.M.; four grandchildren-Rachael and Elijah Bosley and Cassidy and Teslin Ruge; two brothers-Norman K. Bosley (Karen) of Long Beach Twp., N.J., and David M. Bosley (Ellen) of Vienna, Va., and a sister, Diane Bosley Hazen (E.R.) of Shelton, Wash.
