Ann grew up in Boyertown, PA daughter of Curtis and Stella (Kolb) Benfield and sister of Louise Kolb. She said often how wonderful her childhood was and how she enjoyed being able to see many of her relatives often.
Ann graduated from Boyertown Area High School, a member of the Class of 1964. In high school, she was a nationally recognized member of the Debate Club along with her cousin, Charles.
After high school, Ann moved to Washington, D.C. to attend George Washington University, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and served as president of her Sorority, Chi Omega.
After attending Law school in Kentucky, Ann spent the bulk of her law career as clerk, and later head clerk for a 6th district federal court judge.
While in Louisville Ann was an active member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Women's Lawyers Association. Ann supported her community as a rape crisis counselor and a hospice volunteer.
Ann returned to PA, Gettysburg, in 2005 and ran a small horse farm in with her partner. Sadly, a fall that resulted in a brain injury ended that chapter in Ann's life. The last couple of years Ann spent enjoying life as much as possible in assisted living in Westminster, MD.
Ann was a member of the The Good Shepard UCC in Boyertown, PA.
Memorial services will be on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

Ann was a loving friend and a kind, compassionate person. She always had a ready smile and took joy in spending time with her friends and family. She was one of the first people I met on my first day of law school and I'll always remember her warm smile. We will miss her. Karen and Greg

I knew Ann well while she lived in Louisville. We clerked together for Judge Allen and enjoyed social time together. When she discovered her interest in Paso Finos, her horse Paco stayed at my farm and we enjoyed riding together. She was an energetic soul, full of life and courageous in her struggles with depression. My thoughts are with those she has left behind.

I worked with Ann at the Federal Courthouse in Louisville for many
years. Although we worked for different Judges, I had many occasions to read her work. Ann was an accomplished legal writer whose insight and analysis of complex issues was unparalleled. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her, both as a
consummate professional and as a kind and caring person.
Rest in Peace, Ann
