Stella Nicholas Obituary

Stella Lampropoulos Nicholas passed away peacefully July 27, 2011 in Hingham at the age of 104 years. She was born in 1906 in Ipswich, daughter of Harry and Bessie (Mitropolis) Lampropoulos. She had three sisters and two brothers as well as many nieces and nephews in Ipswich. After her marriage to Michael Nicholas in 1937, they moved to Vermont and then Williamstown where she and her husband operated the College Restaurant, adjacent to the campus of Williams College, and the Taconic Park Restaurant, where they were the first in the area to have a tank of live lobsters so diners could order the freshest of lobster dinners. Family was very important to Stella so after her husbands death, Stella and her sister Colleen moved back to Ipswich. Stella had an avid interest in Greece, the country of her heritage, and in her 70s made several trips there. In 2005, Stella moved to Hingham to live at Allerton and Harbor House, near her son and his family. She was known for her vitality and spunk which remained with her until the end of her life. She is survived by her son Nestor and daughter-in-law Anne, her grandsons Matthew and Michael and his wife Anna, and three great grandchildren Josephine Stella, Clementine Margaret and Atticus Weymouth Nicholas. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in Ipswich and her dear friend Deborah Macri and Phyllis Barkas. Funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 1, at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 Lafayette Rd., Ipswich.
