Gertrude Salerno Obituary

Gertrude 'Trudy' (Rogers) Salerno, Cohasset, MA died peacefully December 19th, 2020 just shy of her 88th Birthday. Beloved wife of 61 years of the late Nicholas J. Salerno, she was born in Newark, NJ to John D. and Gertrude Rogers on December 27, 1932. She graduated from Our Lady of the Valley High School, Orange, NJ in 1950 and married Nick on Valentines Day, 1953. Trudy was the mother of eight children, all of whom were dismayed once they left home to discover that no one cooked meals quite as delicious! This ensured years of joyous family gatherings when all would reunite for Trudys memorable holiday feasts, laughter and togetherness. When not supporting the needs of her family or the social demands of Nicks corporate career, Trudy found time to work in the community. She was an office manager at Century 21 Real Estate in Norwell, MA for many years and later became a dedicated staff member for Cohasset Elder Affairs. Juggling the demands of a busy life, she would often say in jest: 'Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did, only in heels and dancing backwards.' Trudy and Nick moved their family from Nutley, NJ to Cohasset in 1971. In spite of the distance, they retained many dear and lifelong friends from New Jersey. Cohasset provided a whole new group of lasting friendships, especially from the Ledgewood neighborhood crowd. Trudy was member of St. Anthonys Parish in Cohasset. Most recently, she was blessed with the kindness and friendship of the residents and the staff of Proprietors Green in Marshfield, MA. Trudy is survived her children, Brian and his wife Alice of Silver Spring, MD; Patricia Sokolowski and her husband John of Derry, NH; Christopher and his wife Alison of Freeport, ME; Matthew and his wife Heidi of Cohasset, MA; Gregory and his wife Pamela of Topsham, ME; Kathryn Saleski of Cohasset MA and SC; and Jennifer DiBona and her husband Dennis (DJ) of Kingston, MA. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Liza Salerno, wife of son Timothy, who passed away in April 2020, a heartbreaking loss for the entire family. Trudy leaves thirteen grandchildren: Brendan, Michael, Meghann, Benjamin, Julie, Carly, Jay, Charles and James Salerno; Jamie Sokolowski, Lea Saleski, and Alfiero and Finn DiBona. She was the sister of Joan Dunham of Avon, N.J. She was predeceased by her brother, John Rogers Senior Chief Petty Officer, USN (ret) of Virginia Beach, VA, and a son-in-law Douglas Saleski. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to, may make a donation in Trudys memory to Cohasset Elder Affairs, 91 Sohier St., Cohasset, MA 02025, or Beacon Hospice, 32 Resnik Rd suite 3 Plymouth, MA 02360
