Thomas Hernan Obituary

Thomas W. Hernan, age 87, of Cohasset, passed away Jan. 4, 2013, after a brief illness. Tom was the beloved husband for 65 years of Margaret Peggy (Marks); and the devoted father of Kathleen Rhodes of Cohasset, Carol Berens and husband Michael of Weymouth, Thomas G. and wife Stephanie of Scituate, and Jack and wife Cindy of Scituate. He was the brother of Donald Dutchy Hernan of Cohasset and the late Robert and Betty Hernan. Mr. Hernan is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Tom was a graduate of Cohasset High School, Class of 1943. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a U.S. Navy Corpsman, attached with the 4th U.S. Marine Corps Division. He was assigned to the conflicts in the Pacific Theatre and took part in the invasions of Tinian, Siapan and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the conflict on Iwo Jima. Mr. Hernan worked for the Cohasset Fire Department for 34 years and retired as Deputy Chief. He was a member of the VFW Post and the American Legion George H. Mealy Post 118 in Cohasset. A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in St. Anthony Church, Cohasset, at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, from 3-7 p.m. in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset. Interment at the Beechwood Cemetery, Cohasset. Donations to honor Mr. Hernan may be made to the George H. Mealy Post 118, P.O. Box 118, Cohasset, MA 02025. I just went into the Cohasset obituaries and was so shocked to see Tommys name. I am so sorry for his lose and extend my sympathy to Peggy and the rest of the Hernan family.

Dear Peggy and all the extended Hernan/Marks Family,

We are so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. I am so happy that Patsy and I were able to visit with you both last October aand catch up on all the family going ons over the past several years. I'm even more happy that we were able to look at the Portugal pictures and see where your mother and father lived and where Lillian,Louis and Manuel (Dad) were born. Our family's prayers and best wishes are with you all.
