Joris Naiman Obituary

Joris Naiman, 61, died at home in Waltham, MA on 9 April 2013. Born in Chicago to Mark and Adeline (Lubell) Naiman, he grew up in Philadelphia and Lincoln. Joris attended UMass and MIT, where he studied metallurgy, rowed and played hockey, and interned in the laboratory of Harold "Doc" Edgerton. Following an engineering M.S. at Rensselaer and management experience in industry, he took a J.D. at Boston College, then received the LL.M. in Environmental and Natural Resources Law, summa cum laude, from Lewis & Clark Law School. During 17 years with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, he achieved many successes in refining and enforcing environmental regulation to protect endangered habitats and wildlife. Joris was an avid hiker and flyer (CFI helicopter and fixed-wing), and was a founding member of the Waltham Land Trust. He is survived by wife and hiking partner Lesya Struz, and brothers Kiri (South Deerfield) and Alaric (Lincoln). A memorial is being planned.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Waltham Land Trust.

I knew Joris when he was a student in our LL.M. program at Lewis and Clark, and I remember him fondly. He always had a smile, was smart and insightful, and was committed to the environment. I enjoyed hearing about his many accomplishments at FWS. We've lost a treasured alum and advocate for a better planet.

All the Walkey children grew up with Joris as the model of the genius. As I got to know him a little as an adult, he was just such a nice guy. Jonathan Walkey

I enjoyed many a flight with Joris in his or my small plane--we had nearly identical models. I learned much from him and will miss our conversations and his gentle humor.

I was so very sorry to hear of Joris's passing. He was such a great attorney and was really thoughtful and diligent in his approach to law. I was a wildlife inspector in New York in the 90's and Joris was so awesome to work with. I saw him within the last couple of years in the Washington Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and said hello to him in the elevator. He STILL remembered a tarantula case I did in NY. He is awesome...I am lucky I got to know him. Again, my sincerest condolences.
