Phoebe McCarthy Obituary

Phoebe Dare Anderson McCarthy of Lincoln died unexpectedly on the evening of December 13, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital. She was born in Troy, New York, on May 24, 1947 to Prof. Sven A. Anderson and Mrs. Phoebe D. Anderson. She received her A.B. in Music magna cum laude from Vassar College and an A.M. from Harvard University, focusing on the Baroque composer Placidus von Camerloher. An officer of the Vassar Club and Junior League of Boston, she lived on Brimmer Street and later in Lexington while pursuing her career in the Massachusetts public schools as a system-wide teacher of music, first in Concord and then in Melrose, where she also taught fourth grade. On August 2, 1986, she married Stephen J. McCarthy at Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington. Her son, Stephen, was born on their first anniversary and the family moved to Lincoln in 1991. Her enthusiasm for arts education included coordinating summer programming for schoolchildren at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, serving on the Educators Advisory Council of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and later selecting arts enrichment programs for the Lincoln schools and Young Audiences of Massachusetts, of which she was a trustee. An avid horticulturalist with a concern for the propagation of native plants, she was a certified Landscape Design Master Consultant who volunteered for the Arnold Arboretum and served on the board of the New England Wildflower Society. She was a member of the Lexington Field & Garden Club, past president of the Lincoln and Junior League Garden Clubs and a keen flower arranger, who contributed to Art in Bloom at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She was often seen knitting through town meetings and her original creations were greatly admired. She took delight in the natural beauty of Lincoln and of Friendship, Maine, where she summered and enjoyed being on the water with her husband. Her thoughtfulness, creative spirit and kindness touched many lives. She is survived by her husband, Stephen J. McCarthy, Sr., and her son, the Rev. Stephen J. McCarthy, Jr., both of Lincoln, and her mother, Phoebe D. Anderson of Melrose, New York. Her funeral will be held at 11 oclock on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6th, 2018 at St. Annes in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 147 Concord Road, Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the organizations in which she was involved, or to the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust. Arrangements under the care of Glenn D. Burlamachi, Concord Funeral Home, A Life Celebration Home, Concord. To share a memory or offer a condolence visit: www. concordfuneral.com

To a Dear and Special Friend. To a gentle, loving and caring Friend who left us too soon. Phoebe you have inspired so many of us in the Lexington Field & Garden Club. Thank you for coming in September with Steve. I did not know that when I said to you by coming "this was the best gift of the day that you have given to me", became the best gift forever. Thank you Mrs. Anderson, Steve, and Steven for sharing her with so many of us. Love

Amy and I were surprised to learn of Phoebe's passing. She was a vibrant woman, so excited by life, music, and the arts. I remember her giving us a plant, lamb's ear, to plant as good luck when we bought our house in Melrose, MA. I also remember her passion for knitting: she was outraged when officials threatened to seize her knitting needles at Heathrow Airport prior to our flight in 1998! We are thinking of Steve and Stephen.

It was a true pleasure and honor to be Phoebe's classmate, Vassar, 1969. She was a shining personality: intelligent, funny, friendly to all. I know I am lucky to have known her.

The Lexington Field Garden Club was so sorry to learn of Phoebe's death. She certainly was an avid gardener and loved native plants- long before they became so popular. Her dedication and kindness will be sorely missed.
